FSC's 2010 Hall Of Fame Class Announced

Induction Ceremony is March 20

Six former All-Americans, including two current professional golfers, a longtime administrator and one of Florida Southern’s most avid supporters make up the class of eight individuals selected to the Florida Southern Sports Hall of Fame for 2010.

Current pro golfers Marco Dawson and Darron Stiles were All-Americans and members of Moccasin national championship golf teams - Dawson in 1982 and 1985, Stiles in 1995.  Another Moccasin golfer, Steve Paramore, was a four-time All-American and played on the 2000 national championship team.  The late Brian Bain was an All-American in men’s soccer (1967).  Dana Cozine earned second-team All-America recognition in volleyball in 1984.  Beth Greig was FSC’s first All-American in softball in 1986.  Longtime faculty member Duane Hopkins served as FSC’s NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative from 1999 until his retirement in 2007.  Completing the class of inductees, in the honorary category, is longtime Florida Southern supporter John Mack

The Class of 2010 will be inducted at the Ninth Annual FSC Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday, March 20 at 6 p.m. in Jenkins Field House.  The cost of the banquet is $30 per person or $240 for a table of eight.  The banquet is open to the public.  For tickets, reservations or more information, contact the FSC Athletic Department at 863-680-4246.

Inductee profiles:
Brian Bain, who died in October at the age of 61, was one of the best goalkeepers in the history of FSC men’s soccer.  He started as a freshman and remains the only four-year starting goalkeeper in the program’s history.  Earning All-America recognition as a sophomore in 1967, he set a school record that stood for 30 years with a 1.20 goals against average.  He posted nine career shutouts and a career 1.82 GAA, records that stood for 28 years.  His numbers still have him ranked in the top three of every FSC goalkeeping category.  He was the Moccasins’ team MVP in 1968.  Following his soccer career at FSC, he became well known in Polk County for his work with high school sports, particularly volleyball and wrestling.  He was a key figure in helping to bring the state championship tournaments in those two sports to Lakeland.  He taught in Polk County schools for 35 years and was instrumental in scheduling officials for volleyball and wrestling.  In 2001 he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Dana Cozine had two outstanding volleyball seasons for Florida Southern after playing two seasons at Jefferson Community College in Missouri.  In 1983 she led the team in kills (529) and hitting percentage (.300), while the Moccasins went 25-15.  In 1984 she led the team in kills (568), hitting percentage (.325) and aces (84), as the Moccasins went 27-10, won the Sunshine State Conference title and received an NCAA Tournament bid.  She was a first-team All-Sunshine State Conference selection both years, as well as a second-team All-America pick in 1984.  Her 1984 kill total of 568 ranks as the fifth-best season total in school history.

Marco Dawson was part of a powerhouse Moccasin golf program in the 1980s that won two national championships (1982, 1985) in his four-year career.  Lee Janzen and Rocco Mediate were two of his teammates during his career.  He saved his best golf as a collegiate player for his final round, as he shot a team-best 69 in the final round of the 1985 national championship tournament to finish 10th and help the Moccasins overcome a five-stroke deficit to win the title.  Second on the team in stroke average (74.2) behind Janzen, he was an honorable mention All-America selection in 1985.  Playing professionally on the PGA and Nationwide Tours since 1985, Dawson has compiled over $4 million in winnings.  He has one victory on the Nationwide Tour, capturing the LaSalle Bank Open in 2002.

Beth Greig made a solid impact on the Moccasins’ softball program in just two seasons after transferring from Edison Community College.  In her junior season in 1986, she hit .403 with three home runs, 30 RBI and 21 stolen bases, as the Moccasins were 34-13.  She led the team in runs, hits, batting average, RBI and stolen bases and was a second-team All-American.  The following year, she enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history.  The Moccasins were 49-6 and finished as runner-up in Division II.  Greig hit .430 with four home runs, 21 RBI and 12 stolen bases.  She struck out only three times all season.  At the Division II Championship, where she made the all-tournament team, she was instrumental in FSC’s two wins, scoring the game’s only run in the bottom of the eighth inning for 1-0 decision over Mankato State and driving in the game’s only run with a triple in a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart.  She was a first-team All-America selection in 1987 and her career batting average of .417 is the third-best in FSC history.

Duane Hopkins served as Florida Southern’s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative from 1999 until his retirement from the FSC faculty in 2007.  He was a key figure in organizing the faculty representatives among the Sunshine State Conference schools and served for four years as that group’s chairman.  He also was an original advisor to the SSC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee when it was first organized.  In addition to his responsibilities as faculty athletics representative, Hopkins also served on the NCAA Division II Legislation Committee for six years.  In 2007 he became the first faculty athletics representative elected to the SSC Hall of Fame.  Now retired, Hopkins remains one of FSC’s most devoted followers.

Steve Paramore had a standout four-year career with Moccasin golf team.  As a freshman, he was the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, an honorable mention All-America selection and a member of the Moccasins’ 2000 national championship team.  As a sophomore he finished fourth at the national championship and earned first-team All-America recognition.  In his junior season, the Moccasins made another trip to the national tournament and placed third, as Paramore finished seventh, earning a second straight first-team All-America honor.  As a senior, he was the SSC champion and led the team in stroke average, receiving honorable mention All-America honors.  His golfing success continued after he graduated from FSC, as he won the 2003 Ohio State Amateur Championship and the 2005 Ohio Public Links Championship.  He now is the head boys and girls golf coach at Ashland High School in his hometown of Ashland, Ohio.  He coached his girls’ team to a fourth-place finish at the Ohio State High School Championship in 2009.

Darron Stiles was a four-year performer on the Moccasin golf team, including the 1995 squad that gave coach Charley Matlock his seventh national title in his final event as the Moccasins’ head coach.  Stiles improved his stroke average each season and was second on the team as a junior and senior.  He earned honorable mention All-America recognition in 1993 and was a third-team selection in 1994 and 1995.  He tied for fourth in the 1995 Sunshine State Conference to help the Moccasins win the SSC title and tied for 28th at the Division II Championship.  In the summer of 1995, he was the only Division II player selected to play on a team representing the United States in the USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship.  Playing professionally since 1995, Stiles has won over $1 million on both the PGA Tour and on the Nationwide Tour.  He has four tournament wins on the Nationwide Tour.

John Mack has been affiliated with Florida Southern in a number of different capacities since he began playing baseball for the Moccasins in 1956.  He served as an assistant basketball coach in 1964 under the late Tom Greene.  He was instrumental in the establishment of two of the primary fund raising operations for Moccasin athletics - helping to start the Pop Sikes Golf Tournament for men’s golf in 1976 and helping initiate the Sixth Man Club for men’s basketball in 1978.  He was the recipient of Florida Southern’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1988.  A successful businessman in the insurance business and financial planning field, Mack is now retired.
