Tars Rally Late To Down Mocs In Regular Season Finale
NCAA bids to be announced Sunday night
Rollins scored in each of its last four at-bats to overcome a 3-0 deficit and beat the Moccasins 7-3 in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday at Winter Park.
The Tars (38-17, 16-8 in the Sunshine State Conference) finished their regular season with a nine-game winning streak, while the Moccasins completed their regular season at 39-14, 14-10 SSC.
Wade Kirkland's two-run homer, his 12th of the season, in the first inning put FSC out in front and the Mocs added an unearned run in the second, but that was the end of their scoring. It was a frustrating rest of the afternoon for the Moccasins, as four times - in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh - they had runners at second or third or both with only one out, but could not score.
After a solo home run in the fifth by Taylor Ferguson cut the Mocs' lead to 3-1, the Tars scored in the sixth on a two-out RBI-single by Josh Band and in the seventh on a two-out RBI-triple by Ryan Luker to tie the game.
The Tars' Ben Hewett led off the eighth with a triple and scored on Band's single to put Rollins up 4-3. The Tars went on to add three unearned runs after Kelvin Clark dropped a two-out fly ball in right field.
Daniel Tillman, who relieved Ryan Wolfe in the seventh inning, took the loss, dropping his record to 1-2. Taylor Smith, the third Rollins pitcher, picked up the win to improve to 4-0. Eddie Sipple made the start on the mound for the Moccasins and worked 5.2 innings. He struck out six, walked two and allowed two runs, leaving with a 3-2 lead.
The Moccasins, who were ranked third in the South Region this week, expect to get an NCAA tournament bid when the selections are announced Sunday night. The selection show can be seen at 10 p.m. at www.ncaa.com.
