Softball Signs Five for 2012
The Florida Southern softball team has announced its 2010 fall signing class, with five new players set to join the Moccasins for the 2011-12 school year. The list includes Megan Borak from Clermont, Samantha Gale from St. Cloud, Dayna Hunn from Morriston, and Lauren Wolfe from Lithia. The lone out-of-state signee was Marty Wilcox from South Charleston, West Virginia.
Borak is an outfielder from East Ridge High School who hit .490 with seven doubles, four triples and 25 RBI as a junior, earning her honorable mention Class 6A All-State honors. A switch-hitting slap hitter, Borak was also 21-for-23 on stolen base attempts and has swiped over 100 bases in her 2010 tournament/travel ball season. She helped her 18-and-under team, the Tampa Heatwave, advance to the 2010 USA/ASA Division A national championships in Hemet, California where she batted .514.
A pitcher from St. Cloud High School, Gale is a 3-time First Team All-Orange Belt Conference selection and was Third Team All-State in 2009. As a junior in 2010, she posted a 14-8 record with a 1.39 ERA, had 167 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 120.2 innings. She also went 33-for-61 at the plate for a .541 batting average, hitting three home runs with 23 RBI. Going into her senior year, Gale has struck out 441 batters in 371 career innings, and has a .488 career batting average. Like Borak, she’s played travel ball for the Tampa Heatwave, and is now with the South Florida Mini Bulls.
Hunn has signed with Florida Southern from Williston High School where she was a First Team All-State selection as a junior and the Gainesville Sun Big School Player-of-the-Year. She hit .464 with seven home runs and 32 RBI in helping the Red Devils advance to the 3A state semifinals. A third baseman and catcher for Williston, she was the 3A Defensive Player-of-the-Year in 2010 as well. Hunn also plays the outfield in travel ball, which included the Gold Coast Hurricanes in 2010.
Wolfe is joining the Moccasins from nearby Durant High School and is both a pitcher and first baseman. She was an All-Hillsborough County selection as a sophomore when she went 8-3, and over the last two years has struck out 201 batters in 179 innings while limiting opposing batters to a .161 average and just over four hits per game. She also plays for the Tampa Heatwave where she’s been a teammate of Borak and Gale, and has put together a 0.71 ERA and a .331 batting average.
Coming to Florida Southern from Charleston Catholic High School in West Virginia, Wilcox is a 3-year starter at shortstop, but plays primarily second base and the outfield for her travel ball team, the South Florida Mini Bulls. It’s the same Tampa-based team that also has Gale on the roster. In West Virginia, Wilcox has been a 3-time First Team All-State selection and was the West Virginia State Freshman-of-the-Year in 2008. Last year, she hit .527 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI.
