West Florida Secures Win in Singles; #8 Argonauts Defeat #7 Moccasins, 7-2
PENSACOLA - In the first of their five matches against top-10 teams this year, 7th-ranked Florida Southern got on the board early against 8th-ranked West Florida, but saw the Argonauts win five straight singles matches to take a 7-2 decision over the Moccasins.
Florida Southern (1-1) got that early point from the #3 doubles team of Jorge Gutierrez and Nathan Leavitt, who defeated Sean Gunnels and Mike Lue, 8-4. That allowed the Mocs to leave doubles play trailing only 2-1. The Argonauts, however, picked up a couple of 6-2, 6-2 wins at #2 and #6 singles, and another win at #4 when C.J. Johnson was forced to retire in the second set. All of that allowed the Argos to clinch the match in their 2011 season opener.
The Moccasins would later get their second point when Benoit Paradis defeated Gunnels in three sets at the #3 position. The freshman dropped the first set in a tie-breaker, but came back to win the next one 7-5. He earned his first collegiate victory by winning the third-set super tie-breaker, 10-8.
Florida Southern remains in Pensacola for its next match, taking on Stillman College from Alabama on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. central time.
