Mocs Win Opener Behind Stromberg's Impressive Debut
An impressive debut by Kate Stromberg helped power the Moccasins to a 25-17, 19-25, 25-19, 26-24 win over St. Edward's (Texas) in their season-opening match in the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic at Jenkins Field House Friday.
The freshman from Lexington, Ky., led the team witih 15 kills, made no hitting errors and hit .556 for the match. Behind Stromberg, the Moccasins had a trio of players with 12 kills each - Erin Callahan (her career high), Anne Pietkiewicz and another freshman, Gabby Fernandez. Pietkiewicz added 12 digs for a double-double, the 17th of her career. Setters Kendall Wilde and Ali Skayhan also posted double-doubles. Wilde had 23 assists and 13 digs, while Skayhan had 29 assists and a career-high 20 digs. Elena Sorich, who started at libero, notched a career-high 21 digs. Courtney Trevino led St. Edward's with 11 kills.
The Moccasins play their second match of the day at 7 p.m. against New Haven. Earlier Friday Rollins defeated St. Edward's 25-18, 26-24, 25-18 and defeated New Haven 25-23, 25-15, 27-25.
