Alvarado Scores Two Goals to Pace Mocs
Adi Alvarado scored two goals, while Martina Tangen Billing had six saves to lift Florida Southern to a 3-0 win over West Florida on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Mocs improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Argonauts fall to 1-2-1.
West Florida came out firing taking six out of the first seven shots of the game, but Tangen Billing made three saves to halt the attack. Then, in the 21st minute Emily Griffith found Alvarado near midfield, who dribbled the ball down the field and fired a shot from just outside the penalty area into the back of the net to give the Mocs a 1-0 lead. The Mocs and Argos played even for the rest of the half.
The Moccasins kept up the pressure in the second half on both sides of the ball. In the 65th minute Kirra Rainbow brought the ball up the right flank and crossed to Kayla Wilhide who found Alvardo in front of the net for her second goal of the game.
In the 75th minute an Emily Griffith header gave the Mocs a 3-0. Kara Moore took a free kick which the Argos’ goalie Ali Ryan batted away to Wilhide, whose shot was blocked into the air to Griffith for the header.
“This was the most complete game we’ve played all year,” said head coach Ben Strawbridge. “We came out and executed our game plan."
The Moccasins outshot the Argos 15-10 in the game, including 12-3 in the second half. Tangen Billing picked up her 19th career shutout and first of the season.
“West Florida is a very classy and talented team,” said Strawbridge.
Florida Southern will return to actions Wednesday night when they travel to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd College in their conference opener. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
