Mocs fall to Spartans 3-0
Tampa’s Gabby Russo leads the Sunshine State Conference in assists and Friday night she showed why, as Spartans defeated Florida Southern 3-0. With the win the Spartans improve to 7-4-2 and 1-2-1 in the SSC, while the Moccasins fell to 7-4-1 and 2-2-1 in conference play.
The Spartans came out strong, taking six of the first seven shots, but the Mocs' defense held its ground. In the 13th minute Alyson Gregorowicz had a chance at an open net goal, but Lexie Bottomley was able to step in for the team save and preserve the deadlock.
The Moccasins' offense picked up the pace, with the best opportunity coming in the 29th minute, when Kara Moore’s free kick clinked off the cross bar.
The game remained scoreless until the 41st minute, when Amber Pennybaker found Natalie Gibson at the top of the box for the goal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The second half began much like the first, with the Spartans taking the first shots. In the 59th minute Russo intercepted a goalie kick and passed it ahead to Marta Bertsos, who got behind the defense and beat Erin Moseley to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Russo would tally her second assist on the Spartans' final goal.
The Moccasins finished the game with 12 shots. Martina Tangen Billing and Mosley combined for seven saves in the contest.
The Moccasins return to Barnett Field Sunday afternoon to take on conference foe Lynn. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
