Mocs Earn Seven Votes In AVCA Preseason Coaches' Poll
LEXINGTON, Kent. – Florida Southern earned seven votes in the Preseason AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) NCAA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll that was released on Tuesday afternoon.
FSC, who finished with an 18-13 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA South Regional and earned its 24th NCAA Tournament berth in program history, was one of four Sunshine State Conference teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason AVCA poll.
The Mocs were last ranked in the AVCA poll during the 2010 season when they were 24th in the preseason poll. Entering the 2012 season, FSC has been ranked a total of 201 weeks in the AVCA poll, which is the sixth best among all Division II schools.
Tampa (33-2) was the highest ranked SSC school as the Spartans earned 760 points to stand No. 2, while Eckerd (27-5) is 19th and Rollins (24-11) opens the season ranked 22nd.
In addition to the three SSC foes ranked, the Moccasins are also scheduled to play five other teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll. Flagler, who FSC will play on Sept. 14 at Armstrong Atlantic’s tournament, is ranked 16th, while Armstrong Atlantic (39 votes), West Florida (33 votes), Missouri S&T (24 votes) and Western Washington (20 votes) all received votes in the poll.
The poll is voted on by 32 AVCA Division II member coaches and is released weekly during the season. The first poll of the regular season will be released on Sept. 3.
Concordia-St. Paul (32-4) opens the season as the team to beat as the Golden Bears will seek to win its sixth consecutive NCAA DI-II national title this season. Following Concordia-St. Paul in the preseason poll is Tampa at No. 2, while Cal State-San Bernardino (32-1) opens at No. 3. Nebraska-Kearney (32-2) is ranked fourth and Central Missouri (29-5) rounds out the Top 5.
SW Minnesota State (25-7) begins the season at No. 6 and they are followed by Minnesota-Duluth (28-4) and Washburn (32-3), who are both tied for seventh. West Texas A&M (34-3) opens the season at No. 9 and Hillsdale (32-3) and Indianapolis (24-8) are tied for 10th.
The next 10 of the poll begins with Wayne State [NE] (23-8) at No. 12 and the Wildcats are followed by Metro State (24-7) at No. 13 and Ferris State (28-4) at No. 14. Angelo State (31-6) begins the season at No. 15, while Flagler is at No. 16 and UC-San Diego (22-6) is at No. 17. Lewis (25-7) is at No. 18 and they are followed by Eckerd at No. 19 and BYU-Hawaii (19-4) rounds out the Top 20 at No. 20.
Wingate (32-1) opens the season at No. 21 and they are followed by Rollins at No. 22 and Minnesota State at No. 23. Sonoma State (23-7) is ranked 24th, while Colorado School of Mines (19-11) and Wheeling Jesuit (36-4) complete the preseason poll in a tie for 25th.
FSC, who began practice for the upcoming season on Monday, opens its 2012 campaign on Aug. 30-31 at the Western Oregon Classic in Monmouth, Ore. The Mocs will open the tournament on Aug. 30 against Western Washington at 12:30 p.m. EDT and then will face Western Oregon at 10:30 p.m. EDT. On Friday, Aug. 31, FSC will play Missouri S&T at 3 p.m. EDT and Cal State-Los Angeles at 10:30 p.m. EDT.
