Men's Cross Country Opens Season With Win at Tampa Early Bird Classic
DOVER - Showing why they are one of the early favorites in the South Region, the Moccasin men's cross country squad opened their 2012 cross country campaign in good fashion by winning the Tampa Early Bird Classic, held here Friday evening. Three Florida Southern runners finished in the Top 10 helping the squad score 57 points to narrowly pull out the team victory over Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Tech, who scored 60 points.
Junior Chris Yanichko (Grove City, Ohio) was the highest finishing Moc, covering the four mile course in a time of 20:27 to finish second overall, while junior David Tomchinsky (Englewood, Fla.) finished third with a time of 20:29. Freshman Jose Perez (Haines City, Fla.) finished seventh in 20:46 in his first collegiate meet, followed by junior Chris Trebilcock (Alachua, Fla), who finished 13th in a time of 21:03 and sophomore Logan Selzer (Wesley Chapel, Fla) came in 47th place in a time of 22:40.
Rounding out the Moccasin runners were freshman John Stratton (Brooksville, Fla.), sophomore 73rd in 24:20, Andrew Coull (Royersford, Pa.) 75th in 24:32, freshman James Kieck (Englewood, Fla), 87th in 25:58 and senior Zach Wheeler (Tampa, Fla), 94th in 28:59. Saint Leo runner Carl Dunne was the overall individual winner finishing the four mile course in a time of 20:20.
