Luber Wins Consolation Title in Flight A Singles at C.L. Varner Invitational
Emanuel Luber won consolation title in Flight A singles at C.L. Varner Invitational.WINTER PARK - Sophomore Emanuel Luber (Tiengen, Germany) closed out play here Sunday at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins College with a championship in the consolation draw of Flight A singles.
Luber, who finished with a 3-1 record in singles at the three-day event, picked up his title in the Flight A singles consolation bracket with a straight sets win over Rollins' Adrian DiFelice (6-2, 6-1). Luber, who lost in the first round of Flight A singles to Lander's Paul-Henri Arrigoni (6-2, 6-3) to fall into the consolation bracket, advanced to finals with a victory Saturday over Florida Tech's Patrick Hernandez (6-3, 6-1). DiFelice earned his finals match-up with Luber after defeating Moc sophomore Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) in the semifinals (7-5, 6-2).
While Luber took home the title in the Flight A consolation singles bracket, sophomore Austin Comings (Heathrow, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals of the Flight C consolation bracket before falling on Sunday morning to Saint Leo Jake Fleischer (6-1, 6-4). Comings earned his semifinal berth after earning a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In Flight B singles, junior Robbie Palmiotto (Boca Raton, Fla.) went 1-2 after falling in the semifinals of the Flight B consolation bracket to Lander's Adam Jonsson (7-5, 6-1), while sophomore Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) posted an 0-2 record.
The Mocs other singles came came in Flight D as freshman Luke Palmiotto (Boca Raton, Fla.) went 1-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket before falling to Bethune-Cookman's Kip Jackson in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Junior Tejas Krishnan (Chennai, India) went 0-2 as he fell in the first round of the main draw to Bethune-Cookman's Gilbert Rotich (6-4, 6-2) and then lost to Bethune-Cookman's Sevi Day in the first round of the consolation bracket (6-4, 6-0).
Meanwhile, in doubles action, Luber partnered with Garneau in the main draw of Flight A and opened the tournament with an 8-4 loss to Saint Leo's Ismail Lentouni and Bruno Sisti, but was unable to play any consolation matches as both of the consolation doubles brackets were scrapped after rain halted play on Friday.
In Flight B doubles, the Palmiotto brothers teamed up to fall in the first round to Flagler's David Espinosa and Inigo Landalace by a score of 8-4, while Comings and Lundberg fell by an 8-2 score in the first round to Bethune-Cookman's tandem of Santiago Lobelo and Diego Garavito.
