HEAD SWIM COACH DUNCAN SHERRARD WINS COACHING AWARD… Head Coach Duncan Sherrard was named Senior Coach of the Year by the Florida Swimming Association at its annual House of Delegates meeting in Howie in the Hills.  According to the FSA, the Senior Coach of the Year award is given to a senior coach who has had the biggest impact on swimming in the state of Florida. Sherrard led the Florida Southern men’s and women’s swim teams this past season to third place and 10th place finishes respectively at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships. During the 2011-12 season, Sherrard coached six swimmers to national championships in three events

MEN’S GOLF FINISHES FIFTH … Led by senior Case Gard and freshman Austin Schultz the Mocs were able to finish fifth out of 16 teams at the Guy Harvey Invitational this past weekend. Gard finished the tournament in sixth place by shooting four-under par with a season best 67 coming in round 2. He was also one of only two golfers in the tournament to shoot two rounds in the 60’s. Schultz carded back-to-back rounds under par to open the tournament and would eventually finish tied for 15th at three-over par.

WOMEN’S GOLF FINISHES THIRD … Led by senior Amy Hodgkinson and junior Barbora Vejlupkova the women’s golf team jumped two schools during the final round to finish third out of 18 teams at the Guy Harvey Invitational. Hodgkinson and Vejlupkova finished the 36-hole tournament shooting a six-over 150 to finish tied for 10th.

SSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK PRESENTED BY VALIC … Another Florida Southern Moccasin volleyball player wins SSC Player of the Weeks Honors. Right side hitter Gabby Fernandez earned this week’s Offensive Player of the Week honors for averaging 3.18 kills per set and hitting .382 over 11 sets and three total matches. She joins setter Ali Skayhan (Offensive), outside hitter Anne Pietkiewicz (Offensive) and libero Arielle Fernandez (Defensive) as Mocs that have won player of the week honors this season so far.

MIDNIGHT MADNESS SCHEDULED … Midnight Madness is coming back to Jenkins Field House to open up practice for the 2012-13 basketball season for the Mocs on October 14. Students, as well as the general public is invited to come on out, meet the teams and enjoy the festivities. There are many prizes available for the students to win along with raffles. The prizes are for students only but the raffles are for all to enjoy. The madness starts at 10 p.m. and lasts till midnight!

WATER SKI REPEATS AS NCWSA EASTERN REGION CHAMPS … Both men’s and women’s water ski teams put together a dominating performance to take home the 2012 National Collegiate Water Ski Association Eastern Regional Championship  at Lymanland Lake and earning a return trip to the NCWSA National Championship in Louisiana on Oct. 17-21. Freshman Thibault Dialand finished first overall in the men’s division while sophomore Lauren Morgan finished second overall in the women’s division. Florida Southern finished in first place overall above the University of Alabama and SSC rival, Rollins College.

MEN’S BASKETBALL RANKED 15th IN PRESEASON DIV. II BULLETIN … The men are early favorites to win the Sunshine State Conference Title as they return their starters from last season’s 20-12 squad who earned a berth to the NCAA South Regional Tournament after winning the 2011-12 SSC Conference Tournament. The Mocs are also preseason ranked 15th in the country for the upcoming season. They are the highest ranked SSC team in the poll with Saint Leo the only other conference opponent in the rankings at 23rd. Senior guard Seth Evans was named a Preseason Honorable Mention All-American and was also named as the publication's Preseason SSC Player of the Year.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TABBED TO FINISH THIRD IN SSC IN WOMEN'S DIVISION II BULLETIN … After coming off a 24-7 record, a SSC Regular Season Championship and a berth to the NCAA D-II South Regional Semifinals in the 2011-12 season the Florida Southern Moccasins are picked to finish third in the SSC this year under first-year head coach Holly Borchers. The Mocs return two starts and six total letterwinners from last year. Their first game is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in Aiken, S.C. against USC-Aiken.

MOC TEAMS HELP OUT DURING FALL BREAK … Several Moc athletic teams did some community service volunteering this past week during FSC’s fall break. The softball team helped out last Friday at the Cleveland Court Fall Carnival. At the event, the Moc assisted with different carnival events and games at the local elementary school in Lakeland, while interacting with the children and their families. The Mocs men’s and women’s swimming team volunteered their services on Thursday evening the 2012 Lakeland City Swimming Championships. At the meet, the Mocs served as timers, runners of results and helped with awards.

THE MOCS REPORT … Listen to the weekly Mocs Report on WLKF (1430 AM) in Lakeland at approximately 7:40 a.m. FSC Asst. Athletic Director for Athletic Communication Ben Greenberg provides information and updates on Moccasin Athletics each week with “Mayhem in the AM” host Len Erickson. The program will air each Friday morning throughout the school year.
