Benoit Paradis Named First-Team All-SSC Honoree
WINTER PARK - Benoit Paradis was honored for his outstanding performance in singles during the 2013 season on Friday as the junior from Quebec City, Quebec, was named a First-Team All-Sunshine State Conference selection by the league coaches.
Paradis becomes the first Moccasin to earn first team honors in singles since Michael Knoedler and Roman Schirmaier were honored in 2010. In addition, Paradis earned second team honors in doubles last season with sophomore Emanuel Lueber.
This season, Paradis posted a team-best 15-6 record in singles, including going 15-5 at the No. 2 spot. In SSC play, Paradis posted a 4-2 mark in No. 2 singles with his two losses coming to Rollins' Malte Christesen, who earned second team honors and to Barry's Renato Lombardi. Paradis comes into this weekend's NCAA D-II South Regional in Pensacola having won six of his last eight matches, including winning two straight matches overall.
Joining Paradis on the All-SSC first team for singles are Saint Leo junior Aloua Adjenak, Lynn junior Vlad Cirla, Florida Tech's Nicolas Clerc, Barry sophomore Fabian Groetsch, Barry senior Marco Mokrzycki and Barry senior Max Wimmer. In doubles, the first team consists of Florida Tech's Clerc and Patrick Hernandez, Barry's Mokrzycki and Groetsch and Lynn's Cirla and Willi Wolfer.
Barry took home two of the league's individual awards as Mokrzycki was named the SSC Player of the Year and George Samuel earned Coach of the Year honors for the sixth straight season after leading the Buccaneers to its second consecutive SSC title and fifth in the last six seasons. Rollins' Robin Marchione was named the SSC Freshman of the Year.
The All-SSC second team in singles consists of Christesen, Marchione, Barry junior Romain Costamagna, Lynn freshman Simon Gloeckner, Lynn freshman Pavel Mojha and Saint Leo junior Matt Nicholson-Lewis, while the All-SSC second team doubles consists of Rollins' Will Kwok and Jason Alabaster, Saint Leo Nicholson-Lewis and Bruno Sisti and Barry's Wimmer and Ollie Lemaitre.
Paradis and the rest of his Moccasin teammates will return to action on Saturday, April 27 as the 29th-ranked and No. 7 seed Moccasins (14-9) open up play in the NCAA Division II South Regional in Pensacola against No. 2 seed and No. 3 ranked West Florida at in an 11 a.m. EST first round match. The other match in Pensacola features No. 3 Lynn against No. 6 West Alabama. The two winnners will meet in the finals on Sunday, April 28 at 12 p.m. EST. The Mocs will be facing UWF for the second time this season as the Argonauts defeated FSC, 7-2 in Pensacola on April 7.
