Mocs Conclude Play in Rollins' C.L. Varner Memorial Tournament
WINTER PARK - Florida Southern concluded play here Saturday at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins College as all four of its players in singles lost, while all three of its doubles teams each also fell in second round action to complete its fall tournament schedule.
In Saturday's singles action, senior Benoit Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) fell to Barry's Romain Costamagna, 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the semifinals of the Flight A consolation bracket, while senior Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine) picked up a win late on Friday in the Flight B Consolation draw and then fell 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 to Barry's Eduardo Echenique in the semifinals of the Flight B consolation draw.
Junior Austin Comings (Heathrow, Fla.) fell to Lynn's Giulio Gomba, 6-2, 6-4 in the Flight C consolation singles draw and sophomore Luke Palmiotto (Boca Raton, Fla.), who fell in the second round on Friday in the Flight D main draw and then fell in the semifinals of the Flight D consolation bracket.
The Mocs other singles player, junior Emanuel Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) fell in the second round late on Friday to Barry's Kevin Sielman in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 14-12.
Meanwhile, in doubles action, Lueber and Paradis fell in the second round of the Flight A main draw to Barry's Fabian Groetsch and Ahmed Tricki, 8-6.
Barabash and junior Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) fell in the second round Saturday of the Flight B main draw to Lander's Paolo Fernandes and Vincent Verpeauz, 8-5, while Comings and junior Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) suffered a hard-fought 8-6 setback in the second round of the Flight B main draw to Bethune-Cookman's tandem of Gres Almeida and Gilbert Rotich.
