Family Affair Goes Florida Southern's Way in Match Against Webber
LAKELAND - Trey Heath and his father Bill have been coaching or playing college tennis for a long time, but Wednesday afternoon's match was a first for both of them. Facing each other as opposing coaches for the first time ever, Trey's Florida Southern team came out on top of Webber International, 8-1.
The Moccasins (2-0) took the first point of the match, though Webber's #1 doubles team of Caio Cardoso and Philippe Andermatt got the Warriors (1-3) on the scoreboard too. Ben Taylor and Javier Castro would win their doubles match at #2, however, helping the Mocs take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Once there, it was all Florida Southern as the Mocs got quick wins from Nicolas Bigler and Roman Schirmaier before Guenther Fercher clinched the outcome with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Francisco Franco at the #4 position. Taylor and Castro also picked up wins before Brian deMontfort closed out the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 win at #2 in the only singles match that went three sets.
After playing back-to-back days to start the season, Florida Southern will be off until Friday, February 20 when it travels to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd College.
