Mocs Stand 11th in Preseason ITA Division II Rankings
Sabine Goge, Magda Riutort ranked nationally in both singles and doubles
SKILLMAN, N.J. - Florida Southern stands 11th in the Preseason ITA Division II women's tennis rankings for the 2013-14 season that was released late Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Moccasins, who finished last season ranked 12th in the final Division II ITA National poll, is one eight Sunshine State Conference ranked in the preseason ITA National poll, with six of those eight SSC schools ranked in the Top 15. The ITA takes into account all action from the fall in its preseason rankings.
Two-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion Armstrong Atlantic headlines the preseason poll at No. 1 and the Pirates, who have won eight NCAA D-II titles, are followed by BYU-Hawai'i at No. 2 and Barry is the top ranked SSC school as the Buccaneers open the season ranked No. 3.
FSC and Barry are joined in the ITA preseason national poll by fellow SSC schools, Lynn (No. 6), Saint Leo (No. 8), Rollins (No. 9), Florida Tech (No. 15), Nova Southeastern (No. 21) and Tampa (No. 22). Other South Region schools ranked include West Florida (No. 7), Valdosta State (No. 16) and Palm Beach Atlantic (No. 30).
Along with ranking the Top 50 teams in Division II, the ITA also released its national player rankings in both singles and doubles. In the singles rankings, junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) is ranked 22nd nationally after advancing to the Round of 16 singles draw at the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships in Pensacola on Sept. 28 and senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) is ranked 36th nationally after also advancing to the Round of 16 singles draw at this fall's ITA South Regional Championships. During the 2012-13 season, Riutort closed the year ranked 10th in singles and was named as a 2013 ITA South Region Player to Watch.
In the national doubles rankings, Riutort and Goge, who is the Moccasins No. 1 doubles team, are ranked 10th after advancing the semifinals of the open doubles draw at this fall's USTA/ITA South Regional Championships. At the end of last season, Riutort and Goge were ranked 11th nationally in doubles.
The No. 1 ranked singles player nationally is Lynn's Valentine Confalonieri, who won the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships title, the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships singles title and the Women's Singles Super Bowl at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, while the No. 1 ranked doubles team is Barry's duo of Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken, who won the Women's Doubles Super Bowl title, the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships title and the USTA/ITA South Regional championships title.
Prior to releasing the Preseason Division II National rankings, the ITA also released its Preseason Division II South Region rankings and in those rankings, the Mocs were ranked sixth. Barry headlines the poll at No. 1, while Lynn is at No. 2, Saint Leo is fourth, Rollins is fifth, Florida Tech is seventh, Nova Southeastern is ninth and Tampa rounds out the poll at No. 10. The rankings consist of all eight SSC schools, along with West Florida (No. 3) and Valdosta State (No. 8).
In the individual player rankings, Riutort is ranked ninth and Goge is ranked 11th in singles, while Riutort and Goge are the No. 3 ranked doubles teams in the region.
