Mocs Open 10-Match Homestand With 8-1 Win Over Chestnut Hill

LAKELAND - Florida Southern began a 10-match homestand here Monday morning by posting an 8-1 win over Chestnut Hill College in a non-conference match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

The 25th-ranked Moccasins improved to 3-3 on the season and they have now won two straight matches after earning an 7-2 South Region win on Saturday at Palm Beach Atlantic. Chestnut Hill College, which is located in Philadelphia, Pa., was playing its first of six straight matches this week in Florida. The Griffins fell to 3-2 on the season.

FSC, who is now 2-1 at home this season, won Monday's match by taking all three-of-three matches in doubles and winning the first two singles that were completed by junior Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) and senior Nathan Leavitt (Bradenton, Fla.). Lundberg won at the No. 3 singles spot (6-1, 6-0), while Leavitt sealed the Mocs win with a 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.

In doubles, the Mocs won all three matches, including its No. 1 team holding off a challenge from CHC's No. 1 tandem of Yoann Pham and Steven Slay. The Mocs No. 1 team of junior Emanuel Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) and senior Benoit Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) won by a score of 8-5. The Mocs No. 2 and No. 3 teams won by scores of 8-1 and 8-2 respectively.

FSC would go on to win three other singles matches on Monday as Paradis needed a third set to upend Pham as Paradis collected a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win, while senior Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine) improved to 6-0 on the season with his 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win at the No. 5 spot and junior Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) earned a win at the No. 6 spot as he defeated CHC's Pedro Oranges, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

The Griffins only win in the match came at the  No. 1 singles spot as Lueber, who is ranked 49th nationally in Division II, fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) to CHC's Mariano Porter. Lueber fell to 1-5 on the season in singles with three of his losses coming to either national or regionally ranked opponents.

FSC will now take a week off before returning to action on Monday, March 10 as the Mocs host Division I foe East Carolina in a 3 p.m. match at the Wynne Warden Tennis Center.
