Tight Matches Determine Winner as #3 West Florida Downs #25 Florida Southern
LAKELAND – West Florida pulled away late for two doubles points and got three singles points with tight wins at the number one, four and six positions, before the Moccasins’ Carl Lundberg to broke up the shutout at number five, as the 3rd-ranked Argonauts defeated #25 Florida Southern 8-1 on Friday.
West Florida (10-0) won the first doubles match 8-1, but their top two doubles teams took a bit longer before coming up with 8-5 wins that put the Argonauts ahead 3-0 in the team score. In singles play, the Argos got a 7-5, 6-4 win from Bruno Savi, the #1-ranked player in the country, who slipped past Benoit Paradis at the top flight. Pedro Roese won his match over Charles Garneau at No. 6 by the score of 7-5, 7-5, and Douglas Boe was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Nathan Leavitt at No. 4.
The Moccasins (3-6) got their win from Lundberg in a match just as close. He split the first two sets with 31st-ranked Domenico Sano 6-4, 6-7, but won a third-set super-tiebreaker 11-9. It was the first career win over a nationally ranked opponent for the junior from Stocksund, Sweden, who is now 1-1 in such matches this season.
Florida Southern will play again Saturday morning against Northwood (MI) at 9 a.m.
