Richardson Tabbed NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week
DALLAS - Florida Southern sophomore Ben Richardson picked up another Pitcher of the Week accolade on Wednesday afternoon as the right-hander was named the NCBWA Division II South Region Pitcher of the Week.
It is the second Pitcher of the Week honor this week for Richardson as he was named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week presented by VALIC on Monday following his four-hit complete game shutout last Saturday at home against then 13th-ranked Nova Southeastern.
Richardson is the second Moccasin this season to earn an NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week honor as senior Clay Chapman was honored by the organization on March 19.
Against Nova Southeastern, Richardson, who is a native of Orlando, Fla., tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout in Saturday's series finale against the Sharks. In the 1-0 win over NSU to complete the series sweep, Richardson allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter, while recording four strikeouts in the 81-pitch effort to improve his record to 6-3 on the season. It was Richardson's second complete-game shutout of the season.
On the season, Richardson leads the Mocs with six victories on the mound as he is 6-3 with a 3.79 ERA. He has made 10 starts and has thrown two complete games and in 57 innings of work, he has allowed 59 hits and 24 earned runs, while walking 12 and striking out 32. His two complete games is tied for the team lead with Chapman, while his two shutouts is tops on the team.
In addition to Richardson, Delta State's Jordan Chovanec was named the NCBWA's South Region Hitter of the Week.
Along with naming their Players of the Week in all eight of the NCAA Division II regions, the NCBWA also announced its National Division II Hitter and Pitcher of the Week as Slippery Rock senior shortstop Will Kengoer earned Hitter of the Week and Queens (N.Y.) senior right-hander Jonathan Russell was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.
