INDIANAPOLIS - In the initial NCAA Division II regional men's tennis rankings for the 2014 season that were released late on Wednesday, Florida Southern is ranked eighth and is five Sunshine State Conference schools included in the poll.

The regional rankings are used to determine postseason bids for the NCAA Division II Tournament, with 48 teams earning berths, including seven teams from the South Region. The conference champions from the Sunshine State, Gulf South and SIAC receive an automatic bid. Those three champions are guaranteed spots in the NCAA Tournament regardless of overall record, with the final four spots filled by at-large selections.

FSC, who is 10-9 overall and 2-7 in-region, is one of five SSC schools ranked in the South Regional poll as the Moccasins are joined in the poll by Barry (14-2 overall, 10-1 in-region) at No. 2, Lynn (9-5 overall, 7-4 in-region) is at No. 3, Saint Leo (13-3 overall, 5-3 in-region) is at No. 4 and Rollins (8-7 overall, 3-4 in-region) is seventh.

Joining the five SSC schools in the initial rankings are three GSC and one SIAC school. West Florida (17-0 overall, 16-0 in-region) is ranked No. 1, while West Alabama (17-1 overall, 14-1 in-region) is fifth, Valdosta State (10-5 overall, 9-4 in-region) is sixth and Stillman (14-3 overall, 14-3 in-region), who is from the SIAC, is ninth.

The seven teams selected for the NCAA Tournament from the South Region, which will be formally announced online at www.ncaa.com on Tuesday, April 29, will compete in two preliminary-rounds tournaments at campus sites in the region. The two winning teams from each preliminary site will advance to the 2014 NCAA D-II National Championships, which is scheduled for May 14-17 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and is hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College. The two preliminary South Regional tournaments are scheduled for May 3-6.

FSC, who is ranked 32nd nationally in the latest ITA Division II Tennis rankings, will return to action on April 24-26 as they travel to Winter Park to compete in the 2014 SSC Championships. The Mocs, who finished 2-4 in the SSC regular season standings, is currently fifth in the league standings.
