Cross Country Releases Its 2014 Schedule
LAKELAND - Florida Southern has announced the 2014 schedule for the Moccasin men's and women's cross country teams.
The Mocs, who are led by second-year coach Ben Martucci, will compete in six regular season events, along with competing in both the Sunshine State Conference Championships in Dover, Fla., on Nov. 8 and the NCAA Division II South Regional Championships on Nov. 22 at Sharon Johnston Park in Huntsville, Ala.
FSC will open its 2014 regular season on Friday, Sept. 5 as they compete at the University of South Florida Open, which will be held at the USF Golf Course. Following the USF Open, the Mocs will compete at the University of Tampa Early Bird on Friday, Sept. 12 at the Sydney Dover Trails in Dover, Fla. That meet will give the Mocs a chance to run on the course that will host the 2014 SSC Championships in early November.
The Mocs will close out the first month of the regular season on Saturday, Sept. 20 as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete at the University of Florida's Mountain Dew Invitational.
FSC will open the month of October by competing in the Flarunners.com Invitational held at Titusville High School in Titusville, Fla., on Friday, Oct. 3, before competing the next Friday at the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee on Oct. 10 and the Mocs will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Valdosta State Cross Country Challenge in Valdosta, Ga.
The 2014 postseason will start for FSC on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the SSC Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Tampa and held at the Sydney Dover Trails. Last season, the Moccasin men took home its 16th SSC championship, while the Moccasin women finished fifth overall.
Following the SSC Championships, the NCAA South Region Championships will be hosted by Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Sharon Johnston Park, while the Division II National Championships will be held in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, Dec. 6 as part of the 2014 NCAA Division II Fall Championships Festival. The FSC men advanced to nationals for sixth time in school history last season and finished 27th overall, while the Moccasin women have advanced to nationals three times in school history with the most recent appearance coming in 2006.
The Moccasin men return four of its top seven runners from last season's squad, including sophomore Robert Ormsby (Fort Myers, Fla.), who was named the SSC Freshman of the Year and was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Region squad in 2013, and senior Chris Trebilcock (Alachua, Fla.), who earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors last season, while the Moccasin women welcome back its top four finishers at last year's NCAA Division II South Regionals, senior Jessica Krystek (Ringoes, N.J.), sophomore Ashley Montano (Colorado Springs, Colo.), junior Ashley Dudman (Geneva, Ill.) and junior Rebecca Levy (Mahopac, N.Y.), along with senior Alec Slamal (Temecula, Calif.), who was the team's MVP after being the team's top finisher in five of its first six races, but missed the regional meet due to injury.
