Mocs Place Nine on ITA Scholar-Athlete Team
SKILLMAN, N.J. - Florida Southern placed nine of its women's tennis players on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete Team for the 2013-14 school year on Friday.
In addition to having nine Moccasin student-athletes named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete Team, the Moccasins' team was also one of 57 NCAA Division II women's teams named an ITA All-Academic Team. As a team, the Mocs finished the 2013-14 spring semester with a 3.65 cumulative grade point average.
The Mocs that were named ITA Scholar-Athletes are senior Crystal Copeland (Marietta, Ga.), junior Jill Doerfler (Winter Park, Fla.), senior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.), senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia), senior Pamela Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec), junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain), junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.), senior Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) and senior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany).
Along with Florida Southern, four other Sunshine State Conference schools were named ITA Academic Teams for 2013-14. The four other SSC schools honored were Barry, Florida Tech, Rollins and Tampa.
The SSC also had a total of 39 women's tennis players named as ITA Scholar-Athletes for 2013-14 as Barry had five players selected, Eckerd had two, Florida Tech had 10 selections, FSC had nine, Rollins had eight overall selections and Tampa had five selections.
In order to earn an ITA All-Academic Team award, the team must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).
Meanwhile, the ITA Scholar-Athlete must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
