Former Moc Wayne Raath Finishes as Runner-up at Polk County Amateur
Moccasin women's coach Robbie Davis finishes third, sophomore Jason Huntington finishes fifth
LAKELAND - The final leaderboard at this year's 38th Annual Polk County Amateur Championships had a decidedly Florida Southern feel on Sunday afternoon at Lone Palm Golf Club as three of the top five finishers in the event had ties to the school. The Polk County Amateur is the final of five major amateur tournaments held annually in Polk County.
Former four-time Moccasin All-American men's golfer Wayne Raath (1997-00) finished second overall in the O'Brady's Auburndale/Davenport Championship Flight as he carded a four-under 140 for 36 holes, while current Moccasin women's golf coach Robbie Davis finished third overall as he fired a three-under 141 for 36 holes and Moccasin sophomore-to-be Jason Huntington (Lakeland, Fla.) shot an even-par 144 to finish in fifth place overall.
Raath, who is the general manager at Lone Palm and is a member of both the FSC Athletics Hall of Fame (Class of 2008) and Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame (Class of 2009), opened the two-day event by shooting a four-under par 68 on Saturday to trail first round leader Bruce Cumbess by one shot, before firing an even-par 72 in Sunday's final round.
The former FSC golfer, who helped lead FSC to three consecutive NCAA Division II National titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000, came into the final two holes tied with Cumbess, before parring the 17th hole and bogeying the 18th hole to fall two shots short of the championship. Cumbess, who has won the Lone Palm Club Championship the past three years, birdied the 17th to take a one shot lead and then parred the 18th hole to finish the two-day, 36-hole event with a six-under par 138. He shot rounds of 67 and 71 respectively.
While Raath finished second, Davis, who is entering his 19th season at the helm of Moccasins women's golf program this coming school year, carded a two-under par 70 in Sunday's final round after shooting a one-under 71 in Saturday's first round. Davis, who captured the Polk County Amateur Championship in 1988, entered Sunday's final round in a two-way tie for fourth place after his 71 in the opening round. At last year's Polk County Amateur, Davis finished tied for ninth place.
Huntington, who is entering his second season playing for Doug Gordin's Moccasin men's team, rebounded in Sunday's final round after shooting a two-over par 74 in the first round as he carded a two-under 70 to finish the 36 hole event in fifth place after shooting an even-par 144. At last year's Polk County Amateur, Huntington tied for third place in the first flight.
