Mocs Promote Chris Keen to Associate Head Coach
Keen, who joined Stephens' coaching staff in March of 2013, is entering his second season at Florida Southern after coming to the Moccasins from its Sunshine State Conference rival, Nova Southeastern. Keen spent two seasons as an assistant with the Sharks.
"Chris (Keen) has been an amazing asset to the Florida Southern volleyball program. His creative on court coaching, and his experience and knowledge of the game made a huge impact as soon as he walked in our gym,” Stephens said. “I am so pleased working alongside him, and he is very deserving of this promotion to associate head coach.”
In addition to his coaching duties at Florida Southern, Keen is also in charge of running the Lakeland Community’s Southern Select Volleyball Club and the Assistant Director of the FSC Volleyball Camps.
Prior to coaching at Nova Southeastern, Keen, who is a former collegiate and beach volleyball player, spent three seasons at the University of Florida. He began his tenure at UF as a volunteer for two seasons, before being promoted to an assistant coach and was involved in all aspects of the Gators program. During his time as a volunteer assistant, Keen worked directly with UF’s defensive specialists and helped coordinate the team’s sand volleyball training during the spring. In 2009-10, UF senior libero Elyse Cusack became the Southeastern Conference’s all-time career leader in digs with 2,138 and earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors in each of the two seasons she worked with Keen and also earned a spot on the 2009 NCAA All-Region Team.
Keen joined the Gators in August 2008 after serving as a club coach with On-Court Volleyball in Suwanee, Ga., since November 2007.
Prior to working with the On-Court Volleyball Club, Keen spent one season as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern, where he assisted head coach Nicole McCray. In his one season with the Eagles, he helped lead the team to a quarterfinal appearance in the Southern Conference Tournament and a sixth straight season with a .500 or better record.
Keen joined McCray at Georgia Southern after they both spent the 2005 campaign on the staff of Steffi Legall at the University of Georgia. Keen was a volunteer assistant with the Bulldogs.
Along with his coaching experience, Keen is also an experienced beach volleyball player as he has been a part of several tours in the Southeast, including the East End Volleyball Tour, Dig The Beach and the AVP Qualifying Tour.
As a student-athlete, Keen, who is a native of Indianapolis, Ind., was a three-year lettermen at the University of Findlay from 2003-05. As a player, he set a new single-season school mark in 2005 with 1,376 assists and led the team with 12.07 assists per game. He was also third on the team with 28 service aces and was a two-time member of the MIVA All-Academic Team, while majoring in marketing.
He lettered in volleyball and soccer at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. He helped lead CHS to a state title in 1999 and was named Indiana’s Most Valuable Player that season. Out of high school, he served as a student assistant coach at Marshall University and had stints at Gibonsburg and Findlay High Schools and at his alma mater, Cathedral.
Keen earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Findlay in May 2005.
