WINTER PARK - Jill Doerfler came away as the big winner at this weekend's C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins College as the Florida Southern sophomore took home the singles title on Sunday morning in the Flight D Consolation bracket.
Doerfler, who fell into the consolations after falling in straight sets on Friday to UCF's Katie Spivak in the first round, won two straight matches in the consolation flight, including a straight set win in the Flight D consolation semifinals over Hernando Community College's Julie Fernandez (6-2, 6-0), to make it to Sunday's final. In Sunday's final, the Winter Park, Fla., native won by default over Nova Southeastern's Luisa Pintado. Pintado had earned a spot in the consolation final after her semifinal win over Bethune-Cookman's Gaby Chinchilla.
At the three-day tournament that was shortened by rain on both Friday and Saturday, Doerfler posted a 3-1 record in Flight D singles. Other Moccasins competing in Flight D singles were freshman Andrea Loret de Mola (Lakeland, Fla.), who posted a 0-2 mark and senior Charlotte Brereton (Cheshire, England), who also went 0-2 in singles.
In Flight B singles, sophomore Christie Nunnemann (St. Simmons Island, Ga.) went 1-1 after opening with a first round win over Lynn's Kim Przeslowski (6-3, 6-0). Nunnemann fell in the Flight B quarterfinals to UCF's Josephine Haraldson (6-3, 6-0), who ended up winning the Flight B Main Draw single title on Sunday. Sophomore Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) went 0-2.
The Mocs other win in singles came in Flight C as junior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) opened the main draw with a straight sets (6-1, 6-0) win over Flagler's Gabriela Scammacca, before falling in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) in the quarterfinals to UCF's Sophia Baptista. The other singles competitor in Flight C for the Mocs was junior Crystal Copeland (Marietta, Ga.) as she went 0-2 with a 6-0, 6-4 loss in the first round to Rollins' Mariana Salvador and then 6-3, 6-0 loss on the Flight C consolation quarterfinals to Bethune-Cookman's Maria Dimitrova (6-3, 6-0).
Meanwhile, in doubles action at the tournament, Spagnuolo teamed with Wichmann to go 1-1 in Flight A. The tandem opened their doubles flight with a 9-8 (7-3) win over Rollins' twosome of Ashley Rosenberg and Elissa DeCampli, before falling 8-7 in the quarterfinals to Bethune-Cookman's tandem of Chinchilla and Chinatsu Kajiwara.
In Flight B doubles, Nunnemann was paired with Loret de Mola and they posted an 0-1 record after losing in the first round to Rollins' tandem of Angie Crowley and Emma Wookey (8-3), while Doerfler teamed up with Copeland to post an 0-1 record as they fell in the first round to NSU's Pintado and Bianca Roberts (8-6). The consolation matches in both doubles flights were rained out and never completed.
