WINTER PARK - Florida Southern junior cross country runners David Tomchinsky and Chris Yanichko were named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Men's Cross Country Team on Tuesday morning by the league office.
The All-SSC Men's Cross Country Team voting was conducted by the league's cross country coaches and sports information directors. Neither of them were allowed to vote for their own runners.
This year's All-SSC Men's Cross Country Team is comprised of eight runners, all of which came from four schools in the league. Florida Tech led the was with three selections, while the Moccasins and SSC Champion Nova Southeastern each had two selections and Saint Leo had one runner selected.
Tomchinsky, who is a native of Englewood, Fla., earns All-SSC honors after having two third-place finishes, including coming in third at this year's SSC Championships in Orlando. He ran the 8K SSC race in a season-best time of 26:13.80. His other third place finish occurred at the season-opening UT Early Bird Classic as he ran the 4-mile course in Dover in a time of 20:29.86.
Yanichko, who is a native of Grove City, Ohio, earns All-SSC honors after having two Top 10 finishes, including one Top 5 finish during the season. His top finish on the season was second place at the season-opening UT Early Bird Classic as he ran the 4-mile course in Dover in a time of 20:27.36 and he finished sixth at the SSC Championships as he ran the 8K course at UCF in a time of 26:23.00. His season best 8K time of 26:15.97 occurred at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., where he finished in 31st place overall and was the top Moc finisher.
Florida Tech graduate student Chris Cacciapaglia was named the SSC Runner of the Year, while Saint Leo's Carl Dunne earned Freshman of the Year honors and Nova Southeastern's Bryan Hagopian was named the league's Coach of the Year after leading the Sharks to its first-ever SSC men's cross country title.
Joining Tomchinsky, Yanichko, Cacciapaglia and Dunne on the All-SSC Team was Florida Tech junior David Boiywo, Nova Southeastern junior Timo Kilp, Florida Tech senior Moses Kirui and Nova Southeastern senior Kevin Meagher.
Tomchinsky, Yanichko and the rest of the Mocs continue its 2012 season this weekend as they compete at the NCAA Division II South Regional Championships in Huntsville, Ala. The meet will be held at Sharon Johnston Park and hosted by the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The 10K race will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.
