Niekro Announces 2017 Baseball Schedule: Mocs to Play 23 Home Games

LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern baseball head coach Lance Niekro has announced the 2017 schedule for his Moccasins and FSC fans will be treated to 23 home games at historic Henley Field. In addition to the Moccasins' 49-game schedule, Florida Southern will face the Detroit Tigers in the two teams' annual Spring Training Clash on Feb. 23. The game will be the first played at the newly-renovated Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, Spring Training home of the Tigers.

Niekro and the 20th ranked Moccasins will open the 2017 campaign on the road for the third straight season. Florida Southern will play a three-game series at #19 West Florida on Feb. 3-4 in Pensacola. The Argonauts finished 36-17 overall last season, including a 24-7 mark in the Gulf South Conference and advanced to the NCAA South Regional Tournament.

The home opener comes a week later on Feb. 10 as Florida Southern host Delta State University. The Statesmen were 42-17 in 2016, posted a 23-10 record in the GSC and lost to Nova Southeastern in the NCAA South Region Tournament finals. The next day, FSC will face #33 Mount Olive with a second game against Delta State. Mount Olive was 33-21 last season with two of the losses coming at the hands of the Moccasins. FSC closes out that weekend with a second game against Mount Olive on Sunday.

Florida Southern then hits the road for a three-game series at Claflin on Feb. 17-19. The Moccasins swept the Panthers in three games last season at home by a combined 45-11 score. The Feb. 23 Detroit Tigers game is next and then it's back on the road as the Mocs open Sunshine State Conference play at Lynn on Feb. 24-25 in Boca Raton. The Knights were 29-23 overall last season and 13-11 in the SSC.

The Moccasins return to Henley Field for games against Flagler (30-20) on Feb. 28; #16 Minnesota State-Manakato (36-18 and NCAA Central Regional participants) on Mar. 3; and West Virginia Wesleyan (25-22) on Mar. 5; before traveling to St. Petersburg for a non-conference game at Eckerd on Mar. 7.

A SSC series on the road at Florida Tech (29-21, 11-13 SSC) on Mar. 10-11 wraps up the Mocs' four-game road trip. FSC swept a three-game set from the Panthers last season.

A seven-game homestand – the longest of the season for the Mocs – is next as Florida Southern entertains Ohio Dominican (19-30-1) on Mar. 13, Embry-Riddle (28-22) on Mar. 17-18 and Eckerd (17-28, 5-19 SSC) in conference play on Mar. 24-25. The Moccasins took two of three from Embry-Riddle in 2016 and swept four games from Eckerd.

Florida Southern plays at Flagler in St. Augustine on Mar. 28 before heading South to play Palm Beach Atlantic (21-28) on Mar. 31-Apr. 1 in West Palm Beach. The Moccasins won all three meetings with the Sailfish last season.

The rest of the schedule follows a three at home; three on the road pattern. FSC first plays Rollins (24-25, 8-16 SSC) at home for three games on Apr. 7-8 and then travels to Greenwood, SC for three contests at #28 Lander (44-16 overall and 22-8 in the Peach Belt) on Apr. 14-15. The Bearcats won the NCAA Southeast Regional and finished third at the National Championship.

Back home on Apr. 21-22, FSC host #2 Tampa (41-10, 20-4 SSC and NCAA South Regional Tournament participants) before going on the road to face defending national champions and #1 ranked Nova Southeastern (44-16, 18-6 SSC) on Apr. 28-29.

The final home series of the year takes place on May 7-8 as the Moccasins entertain Barry (24-25, 8-16 SSC) before closing out the regular season on May 12-13 at Saint Leo (27-21, 10-13 SSC). Florida Southern won two of the three games against both teams in their respective season series.
