Moccasins Picked to Finish Third in Preseason SSC Baseball Poll

MELBOURNE - Florida Southern College has been picked to finish third in the Sunshine State Conference preseason baseball poll released today. The poll was voted upon by the league head coaches. The Moccasins share the number three spot with Lynn University, while Nova Southeastern University holds down the top spot, followed by the University of Tampa.

Florida Southern and Lynn garnered 44 points in the poll while Nova Southeastern, the defending NCAA Division II national champions, picked up 64 points, and received six first place votes. Tampa tallied 52 points and had the other three first place votes.

Florida Tech was voted fifth with 38 points, followed by Saint Leo (29 pts.), Rollins (21 pts.), Barry (19 pts.), and Eckerd (8 pts.).

The Moccasins finished third in the 2016 SSC standings with a 14-10 record while finishing 32-17 overall. Tampa won the SSC last season with a 20-4 record and was 41-10 overall. NSU was second with an 18-6 record and a 32-17 overall. Lynn finished fourth at 13-11, 29-23 overall.

Nova Southeastern won the 2016 NCAA title, the school's first and the 18 overall baseball national championship won by Sunshine State Conference schools. The Moccasins have captured nine national titles while Tampa had taken home the gold seven times and Lynn once.

Florida Southern opens the 2017 season on the road on Feb. 3-4 at the University of West Florida in Pensacola with the home opener a week later on Friday, Feb. 10 at Henley Field against Delta State University.
