Walsh Named SSC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

MELBOURNE, FL - Jake Walsh has been named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 13 as announced today by the league office.

Walsh struck out 10 batters without a walk in 8.0 shutout innings in a 1-0 win over 33rd-ranked Mount Olive on Sunday. The junior righthander gave up five hits over the first two innings and then settled down to the retire the next 19 batters in succession. 

The Mount Olive game was Walsh's second start of the season. In his first outing on Feb. 4 at West Florida, he worked 6.0 innings and held the Argonauts to one run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. 

A 2014 graduate of Melbourne High School, Walsh pitched at Jacksonville State University in 2015 before transferring to Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne for the 2016 season. Over the last two years, he struck out 118 batters in 130.1 innings. 

Walsh and his teammates are ranked 20th in the nation and will take a 5-2 record into a weekend series at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. The Moccasins will play single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with all three games getting underway at 1 p.m.
