INDIANAPOLIS - The third and final published NCAA South Region baseball ranking was released today and Florida Southern moved up one spot to number four in the poll behind Delta State, Tampa, and Nova Southeastern. The rankings are compiled by the same committee that will select the seven-team field for the NCAA regional tournament in May.
Florida Southern will take a 33-13 overall ranking and an 11-10 Sunshine State Conference mark into Friday's three-game conference regular season final series at Saint Leo University.
Delta State is 37-11 overall while Tampa is 34-12 and Nova Southeastern is 32-15 overall.
Following the fourth-ranked Moccasins are Valdosta State (32-19), North Alabama (32-18) and West Alabama (31-18). Rounding out the top nine are Union (32-18) and Florida Tech (27-19).
The South Region is comprised of the Sunshine State, Gulf South, and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conferences, along with independent Palm Beach Atlantic. Seven teams will be selected for the South Region Tournament, May 18-22, with the winner of the SSC, GSC, and SIAC, each receiving an automatic berth, leaving four at-large bids.
Number one ranked Delta State is from the Gulf South Conference along with #5 Valdosta State, #6 North Alabama, #7 West Alabama, and #8 Union. Ranked teams from the Sunshine State Conference include the fourth-ranked Moccasins along with #2 Tampa, #3 Nova Southeastern, and #9 Florida Tech. No teams from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference are ranked.
Delta State won the GSC Tournament and will receive an automatic bid along with Tampa, which won the SSC regular season.
