MELBOURNE, FL - Jake Walsh has been named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 14. The announcement was made this morning by the league office. It marks the second time this season Walsh has earned the award as he was similarly honor on Feb. 13.
Walsh picked up two wins in two starts against conference opponents last week. The Indialantic, Florida native tossed the Moccasins' first complete game of the season in a 5-1 victory over Barry on May 8. Walsh held the Buccaneers to two hits and one unearned run while striking out ten and issuing zero walks.
In his next start on May 14 at Saint Leo, the junior righthander again struck out 10 batters and walked one in limiting the Lions to three runs on five hits in 5-1/3 innings.
With the two wins, Walsh improves to 12-1 on the season and is now tied for fifth in program history for single season wins. His 10 strikeouts against Saint Leo gives him 103 on the season, making him just the 25th pitcher in Florida Southern history to record 100 or more strikeouts in a single season.
Florida Southern will take a 34-15 record as the number four seed in the NCAA Division II South Regional May 17-22 in Cleveland, Miss.
