LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College men's basketball head coach Mike Donnelly has released his team's schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 campaign, and the slate features 16 home games for the Moccasins.
On tap for the Mocs this season are six teams who appeared in last year's NCAA Tournament, including Sunshine State Conference rival Rollins, which advanced to last year's Elite Eight after winning the SSC Tournament
Also on the schedule for Florida Southern are Barry, Delta State, Eckerd, Le Moyne and Southern New Hampshire - each of whom is coming off an NCAA Tournament berth a year ago. Delta State finished last year with a 23-9 record and fell to Rollins in the second round of the NCAA South Regional. Barry also advanced to the second round of the South Regional and finished 23-7 overall, while Eckerd finished 21-9 and was the runner-up in the battle for the SSC regular-season title. Le Moyne posted a 22-7 record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and Southern New Hampshire finished 21-9 and also earned at at-large spot.
"Although our schedule is once again highly competitive, this is the most balanced schedule we have had since I have been here at Florida Southern," said Donnelly. "Playing well at home and defending our home court is a top priority for us, so I am very excited that we will host 16 regular season home games in 2017-2018."
The action kicks off when the Moccasins head to Cleveland, MS for the GSC/SSC Classic. Florida Southern opens the season against West Alabama at 6 p.m. on Nov. 10, before finishing the weekend against Delta State on Nov. 11. Sunshine State Conference play opens at Saint Leo on Nov. 15, and the Mocs host Palm Beach Atlantic in their first SSC home game on Nov. 18.
"Our schedule will also feature the Terrace Hotel Thanksgiving Classic in November and also the Mocs Christmas Classic in December, which will allow our fans an opportunity to watch some high quality D2 programs play in the Jenkins Fieldhouse. The Sunshine State Conference is regarded as one of the most competitive conferences in the country, and we know that we will be challenged every single night during conference play".
Florida Southern will host the Terrace Hotel Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 24-25. FSC will face Le Moyne (Nov. 24) and Midwestern State (Nov. 25) while hosting neutral-site games between Saint Leo/Midwestern State (Nov. 24) and Saint Leo/Le Moyne (Nov. 25). The Mocs step back into SSC play at Eckerd on Nov. 29 and begin a stretch of six-straight home games when they host Nova Southeastern on Dec. 2 and Embry-Riddle on Dec. 6.
FSC closes out the calendar year with non-conference tilts against Miles (Dec. 13), Emmanuel (Dec. 18), Dominican (Dec. 19) and Southern New Hampshire (Dec. 30). The games against Emmanuel and Dominican are part of the Mocs Christmas Classic, which also features SSC rival Eckerd taking on Dominican (Dec. 18) and Emmanuel (Dec. 19).
The remainder of the schedule is exclusively conference play, highlighted by home games against Lynn (Jan. 6), Rollins (Jan. 13), Saint Leo (Jan. 24), Eckerd (Jan. 31), Barry (Feb. 3), Florida Tech (Feb. 10) and Tampa (Feb. 21).
