MELBOURNE, FLA. – Senior forward Slinky Jones has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week after his two double-doubles helped 10th-ranked Florida Southern to a pair of wins in the Mocs Christmas Classic. It's the second time this season and the fifth time in his career Jones has been named a conference player of the week.
A native of Newburgh, New York, Jones scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Moccasins' 64-61 win over Cedarville on Tuesday, and followed that with 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 69-58 victory over Bloomfield on Wednesday. That gave him averages of 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds for the week while shooting 44 percent from the floor overall, and 33 percent from 3-point range (4-for-12). He also picked up a total of seven assists, two steals and four blocked shots.
Jones currently ranks eighth in the SSC in rebounding with 6.6 per game, and third in blocked shots with a 1.6 average. He also scores 11.7 points per game while helping the Mocs close out the first semester with a 9-1 overall record.
Earlier this year, Jones was named the SSC Defensive Player of the Week following Florida Southern's win at Southern New Hampshire on November 17. All five of his weekly awards from the conference office have been on the defensive side, more than any other player in the league during that time.
