MELBOURNE, FL - After holding one of the Sunshine State Conference's leading scorers to just four points and helping Florida Southern College men's basketball pick up a big home win at Eckerd, Moccasin senior forward Slinky Jones has been selected as the SSC Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Jones was instrumental in the Mocs' 82-69 win over the Tritons on Wednesday as he was tasked as the primary defender on Eckerd's Drushaun McLaurn. Jones helped hold McLaurn to just four points on 1-of-10 shooting, more than 14 points less than McLaurn's scoring average entering the game (18.9 ppg), and added 13 points, six rebounds, one assist, one block, and four steals for Florida Southern.
McLaurn's scoring total was the lowest since his freshman campaign, when he scored four against Tampa on Feb. 6, 2016. He has scored in double figures in every other game this season, but Jones and the Moccasins were able to shut him down and hold Eckerd to just 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from the floor in the first half, when McLaurn went 0-of-6.
In Saturday's loss at Rollins, Jones had another solid performance with 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. He currently ranks fifth in the SSC in blocks per game (1.3) and total blocks (20), and needs just 12 more to move into the career top-10 at FSC in blocked shots. He has now won the SSC's Defensive Player of the Week award three times this season and six times in his career.
The Moccasins are back home on Wednesday to take on Saint Leo at 7:30 p.m., are off on Saturday, and wrap up the month at Tampa on Jan. 30.
