Lawton Named SSC Player of the Year, Hanson Earns Second-Team Honors

MELBOURNE, FL - Jonathan Lawton was named as the SSC Player of the Year and Brett Hanson earned second-team all-SSC honors when the Sunshine State Conference announced its 2018-19 men's basketball awards on Thursday. Lawton, who ranks first in the conference in three-pointers per game (3.2), also leads the league in free-throw shooting (.900), is second in points per game (22.9), and is among the top five in minutes (34.7), steals (1.8), and overall three-point percentage (.413).

He is the 11th Moccasin to earn the SSC Player of the Year Award, and the first since Kevin Capers in 2014-15. A first-team all-SSC selection as a junior, Lawton currently ranks 14th in program history in scoring (1,349 points) and has posted two of the top-10 highest single-season point totals in school history (709 - 2017-18, 640 - 2018-19). His 22.9 points per game this season is good for third in program history, while his career scoring average of 22.5 ppg is a program record.

Lawton has scored in double figures in 50-straight games dating back to last season. He ranks 15th among active NCAA Division II players in career scoring (1,912) after scoring 563 in two seasons at St. Thomas Aquinas. Lawton is fourth at the DII level and 27th at all levels of NCAA men's basketball in three-pointers made (293) among active players. Earlier in the day, Florida Southern women's basketball standout Camille Giardina was named as the SSC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, marking the first time since 1997 (Florida Tech) that the same SSC school has won the Player of the Year award on both the men's and women's side.

Hanson, a second team all-SSC selection as a sophomore, was named as the SSC Player of the Week twice this season and ranks fifth in the conference in scoring (18.0 ppg). He has scored in double figures 24 times this season, including 12 performances with 20 or more points. Hanson currently ranks 10th in program history with 1,473 points and has scored at least 500 points in each of the past two seasons.

The Moccasins, who defeated Saint Leo in the SSC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday, will take on No. 2 seed Lynn on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Rick Case Arena in Fort Lauderdale for a spot in the 2019 SSC Tournament title game. This year's championship game will take place on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
