    MELBOURNE – A 68 in the final round Tuesday gave junior John VanDerLaan a runner-up finish at the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championships, while 4th-ranked Florida Southern had a team score of 295 to place fifth as a team. Barry won the league title with a 14-under par 850, putting the 2nd-ranked Buccaneers six shots ahead of second-place and 25th-ranked Saint Leo.

    The Florida Southern men’s golf team begins postseason play this weekend at the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championships at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, with Florida Tech serving as host for the 3-day tournament. It’s the third time the SSC Championships have been held at Duran with the first two coming back-to-back in 2007 and 2008. It will also be the Moccasins’ second visit to Duran this year, with their first resulting in a win at the Panther Invitational in early March.

    MIAMI BEACH, FL – Junior John VanDerLaan was the only golfer in the field Monday to have two rounds in the 60s and held the lead for most of the day. Only a tournament record 11-under par by Nova Southeastern’s Juan Jose Guerra in the second round kept VanDerLaan from finishing the day there. With VanDerLaan now in second place individually, and still four strokes ahead of everyone but Guerra, 4th-ranked Florida Southern ended day one of The Battle at the Shores sixth out of 16 teams competing.

    VALDOSTA, GA – Junior John VanDerLaan had an opening-round 65 on Sunday, a score that would normally put a golfer in the lead, but with the type of field he and the Moccasins are facing at this year’s Southeastern Collegiate, it was only good for second. That 65, however, was still enough to carry 3rd-ranked Florida Southern to fourth place at the end of the day, with the Moccasins trailing first-place Florida Tech by 11 shots.

That puts the Moccasins back where they were the spring semester started as they head to Georgia this weekend for the Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State.

His four-under par 68 gave the Mocs a three-shot win over No. 2 Lynn and host No. 12 Florida Tech, while VanDerLaan himself won medalist honors for the third time in his career.

Anderson’s second-round 69 and a pair of 72s from junior John VanDerLaan had the 4th-ranked Moccasins in the lead by five shots over No. 2 Lynn.

The junior from Valrico, Florida shot a 14-under par 202 to head a field of 75 golfers in the Moccasins’ first tournament of the spring.

    NORMAN, Okla. – The first Division II men’s golf national poll of the spring has been announced and the Florida Southern Moccasins are now No. 4 in the February 17 Bushnell Coaches Poll. The Moccasins remain one of four Sunshine State Conference teams ranked in the top five, and all five of those teams recently played and finished in the top five of the Matlock Collegiate Classic.

Florida Southern’s John Coultas came from behind to win the individual title with a near-record score of 14-under par 202, teammate John VanDerLaan tied a tournament record with a 64 on Tuesday, and top-ranked West Florida blew past the previous team scoring record to finish the Matlock at 34-under par with a winning margin of 18 shots over No. 5 Nova Southeastern.

Down one golfer before they could even get started, the Moccasins fought back in the afternoon’s second round with a two-under par 286 that left them in seventh place, while top-ranked West Florida and No. 5 Nova Southeastern pulled ahead with record-breaking scores that had them in the top two positions in the 15-team field.

    LAKELAND – There will be no easing back into the schedule for the Florida Southern men’s golf team as the Moccasins return to competition this week in the 36th annual Matlock Collegiate Classic. Hosted by Florida Southern every year since 1982, the tournament typically draws the best Division II teams in the country, and this year’s field may be the strongest yet. A total of 15 teams will be competing Monday and Tuesday at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, with two rounds the first day and one the second. Both days will have 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts.

The Moccasins trail only West Florida and Lynn in the final fall rankings, which had five schools from the Sunshine State Conference among the top seven.
