John Coultas Claims Second SSC Weekly Honor of the Fall

For the second time this year, Florida Southern junior John Coultas has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golfer-of-the-Week. It also marks the second straight SSC weekly award for Coultas and the third in three opportunities for the Moccasins as a team this fall.

Coultas claimed his most recent honor after winning a 3-way playoff for the individual title at the Division II National Preview, October 3-4 at Reunion. The 2-time All-American finished the tournament at 11-under par 205 (65-69-71), putting him in a tie with teammate John VanDerLaan and defending individual national champion Hugo Bernard of Saint Leo. Coultas then won the title with a birdie on the first playoff hole, giving him his second win of the season and sixth of his career. He's the first Moccasin to win back-to-back regular season tournaments since Tim Crouch in the spring of 2013.

The 11-under par scores by Coultas and VanDerLaan at the Division II National Preview were the best by a Moccasin golfer since Crouch won the 2012 Matlock Collegiate Classic with a 16-under par 200 in 2013. It gives Coultas a season scoring average of 70.33 strokes per round and dropped his career average to 71.35.

Behind Coultas and VanDerLaan, Florida Southern shot 15-under as a team, which put the 2nd-ranked Moccasins in second place at the Division II National Preview, four shots behind #4 Lynn and six ahead of top-ranked West Florida. The top 10 teams at that tournament were all ranked 16th or higher in the most recent Bushnell Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll. Florida Southern was scheduled to play in another top-flight tournament hosted by Nova Southeastern this week but that was postponed due to effects from Hurricane Matthew.

Florida Southern has now won three of the four SSC Men's Golfer-of-the-Week awards handed out this fall. VanDerLaan won that honor following the Mocs' first tournament of year at Duke, and Coultas won his first award of the 2016-17 season two weeks ago after winning the Saint Leo Invitational.

Prior to this week the last Moccasin men's golfer to win consecutive SSC Player-of-the-Week awards was Crouch following his back-to-back wins at the Matlock Collegiate Classic and Southeastern Collegiate in 2013.
