PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Led by a 73 from junior John Coultas and a 74 from junior John VanDerLaan, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern wrapped up play Tuesday in the GolfRank Invitational with a seventh-place finish.
The Moccasins had a final-round 303 to finish the 2-day, 3-round tournament at +28. Top-ranked Lynn won with a +5, putting the Knights two shots ahead of #3 Barry. Lynn and Barry had gone into the final round in a tie for first, and though Barry's Niclas Weiland won the individual title and Mike Anderson was tied for second overall, Lynn pulled ahead after its #5 golfer through the first two round, Martin Cancino, shot a 69 in the final round. The Bucs also had to count a 79, while the Knights' fourth counter had a 77.
Florida Southern was part of three teams clustered together between fifth and seventh place. Palm Beach Atlantic led that group at +24 followed by 5th-ranked Nova Southeastern at +25, and Florida Southern at +28. The Moccasins were 13 shots ahead of eighth-place Queens University of Charlotte.
Florida Southern's top golfer was VanDerLaan, who tied for seventh with a 3-round total of 217 (+1). VanDerLaan also had their best individual round of the tournament with a 70 in round two, but that was the Mocs' only round under par. VanDerLaan's 217 put him six strokes behind the victorious Weiland, who had rounds of 67, 72, and 72.
Coultas just missed another top-10 finish of his own with a total score of 218 that put him alone in 11th place. He was one of three golfers in the field of 59 whose scores never deviated more than one stroke from round to round. His 73 on Tuesday followed a 73 and 72 from Monday.
Sophomore Christian Anderson shot a 77 on Tuesday as the Moccasins' third counter and also finished as their third golfer in the tournament. He tied for 28th overall with a 227 (+11) and was a counter in all three rounds.
Sophomore Michael VanDerLaan played as an individual and had an 81 in the final round that put him in 48th place overall at 235 (+19).
The GolfRank Invitational was the final tournament of the fall for Florida Southern.
