LAKELAND - Florida Southern men's golf coach Doug Gordin has announced the signing of incoming freshman Jacob Penny, who will join the Moccasins from nearby Durant High School.
"We are very pleased to sign a player of Jacob's caliber," said Gordin, "and look forward to him helping us win another national championship."
Penny is the reigning Premier Junior Tour Player-of-the-Year and comes to Florida Southern from the same high school that produced current All-American and 2016 NCAA Division II Player-of-the-Year John Coultas. As a freshman at Durant High School, Penny finished third at the Class 3A-Region 5 tournament as a freshman, earning him a spot in the state tournament as an individual qualifier. After not competing for his high school team as a sophomore, he returned for his junior year and set the school nine-hole scoring record with a 32.
In his first season (2014) on the Premier Junior Tour, Penny had a 73.5 stroke average in his nine tournaments played and finished with the #1 overall ranking in the men's 16-19 year-old division. He began that season by winning his first three tournaments before finishing second at the Clicgear Major Championship at Reunion Resort. He later won two more tournaments and finished 2014 by capturing the title at the Heritage Isles Junior Shootout with a score of six-under par 138.
In 2015, Penny dropped his stroke average on the Premier Junior Tour down to 72.3, and finished first or second in all 10 of his tournaments. Among them were the East Lake Woodlands Junior Open where he shot a seven-under par 137, and the Ogio Major Championship at the Esplanade, which he won with a five-under par 139.
Penny is currently ranked 4th on the Florida Junior Tour with two wins to date on that tour and has twice posted single-round scores of 65.
