Florida Southern golfer John Coultas has been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team for the second year in a row for his accomplishments both on the course and in the class room. The men's at-large team is comprised of student-athletes in the sports of swimming, tennis, golf, lacrosse, ice hockey, skiing, wrestling, gymnastics, rifle, water polo, fencing, and volleyball. Coultas was one of two Moccasins on the men's at-large team, with senior swimmer Diego Gimenez the other. Gimenez is also on the Academic All-District squad for the second year in a row.
All but one of the 11 student-athletes on the District 5 team came from the Sunshine State Conference, and Florida Southern was one of two schools with multiple selections. Barry University was the other with one golfer and one tennis player. Coultas was one of four golfers on the team, joining West Florida's Chandler Blanchet, Embry-Riddle's Tyler Green, and Barry's Niclas Weiland. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, have completed at least one full year at his or her current school, and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.
The Academic All-District Team is the second big academic award won by Coultas already this spring. In April he was the male recipient of Florida Southern's Pat McFadden Award, which is given annually to the school's male and female student-athletes that best embody athletic and academic achievement. He was also invited to travel to New York earlier that month to meet with Steve Forbes and other business leaders through his involvement in Florida Southern's Barney Barnett School of Business.
A junior from Valrico, Florida with a 3.86 GPA in Business Administration, Coultas has built an equally impressive resume on the golf course for Florida Southern. Already a 2-time All-American, he was recently named a semifinalist for the 2017 Jack Nicklaus Division II National Player-of-the-Year Award, which he won as a sophomore. On top of that, Coultas made the All-Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Team for the third year in a row, and the second time as a First Team selection.
For the season, Coultas owns a 72.10 stroke average and has won three tournaments. He's had a total of five top-10 finishes, four of which saw him place in the top-five. He's helped Florida Southern remain in the top-five of the national rankings the entire season and also helped lead them to a berth the NCAA Division II National Finals in two weeks. The Moccasins earned that spot by finishing as the South/Southeast Region runner-up.
By earning a spot on the all-district team, Coultas will now go on the ballot for the Men's At-Large Academic All-America Team which is scheduled to be announced on June 7. Last year he was voted a Second Team Academic All-American.
