Coultas and VanDerLaan Named Academic All-Americans

GREENWOOD, IN - Florida Southern College men's golf standouts John Coultas and John VanDerLaan have been named as Google Cloud Academic all-Americans, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Wednesday afternoon. The pair were named as at-large selections after helping the Moccasins to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championship this year, while VanDerLaan brought home the individual national title.

Coultas earned first team Academic all-America honors, the third of his career, while VanDerLaan was a third-team selection. Coultas was a first-team honoree a year ago and earned third team Academic all-America in 2016.

A business administration major, Coultas graduated from Florida Southern last month with a 3.88 career grade-point average. VanDerLaan, also a business administration graduate, boasted a 3.65 career GPA.

Both Coultas and VanDerLaan earned first team all-America and all-Sunshine State Conference accolades this year, while VanDerLaan was the, Division II Player of the Year (Nicklaus Award), SSC Male Athlete of the Year, SSC Player of the Year, and the individual champion at the NCAA South Super Regional. VanDerLaan posted nine top-10 finishes this year to go along with seven individual tournament titles. Coultas claimed five top-five finishes and an individual title at the 2018 Matlock Collegiate Classic.

The duo combined to win seven SSC Player of the Week honors this past year, with VanDerLaan claiming five and Coultas collecting two. VanDerLaan finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat Division II individual rankings, while Coultas finished sixth.
