John Coultas Claims Second SSC Weekly Honor of the Fall

For the second time this year, Florida Southern junior John Coultas has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golfer-of-the-Week. It also marks the second straight SSC weekly award for Coultas and the third in three opportunities for the Moccasins as a team this fall.

REUNION, Fla. – John Coultas made it two wins in a row Tuesday but had to defeat teammate John VanDerLaan in a playoff before he could lift the trophy; and though Florida Southern finished second to Lynn University in the team standings, the Moccasins are looking forward to a return trip to the Watson Course at Reunion in May. Finishing play at the NCAA Division II National Preview Tournament with a 15-under par 849, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern ended up four shots behind #4 Lynn, but got a 1-2 finish from its two returning All-Americans to finish six shots ahead of top-ranked West Florida.

REUNION, Fla. – The appropriately named Division II National Preview began at Reunion’s Watson Course Monday morning and the Florida Southern Moccasins again looked right at home while playing with the best teams in the country. Finishing day one and round two of the tournament at 15-under par, the Moccasins trail only Lynn University by a single shot going into Tuesday’s final round as they seek back-to-back wins for the first time in 16 years.

SAINT LEO – There was no drama for 2nd-ranked Florida Southern as a team on Tuesday at the Saint Leo Invitational where the Moccasins picked up their first win of the 2016-17 season by 13 shots over #8 South Carolina-Aiken. Junior John Coultas did add some excitement to the mix, however, by winning a playoff over Cabrick Waters of Limestone (SC) to claim tournament medalist honors and his fifth career individual win.

SAINT LEO – After starting the season with a tournament at Duke University with some of the top Division I teams in the country, Florida Southern was a lot closer to home for its second tournament and the Moccasins immediately re-asserted themselves. Shooting a nine-under par 279 in the first round and adding another 279 in the second round, 2nd-ranked Florida Southern ended day one of the Saint Leo Invitational hosted by the top-ranked Lions with a 17-stroke lead over Limestone (SC).
John VanDerLaan Honored as SSC Player-of-the-Week in Men's Golf

Men’s golfer John VanDerLaan is Florida Southern’s first Sunshine State Conference Player-of-the-Week for the 2016-17 academic year following his season-opening performance at the Rod Myers Invitational last weekend. The junior from Southbury, Connecticut was the Moccasins’ top golfer in a field of 14 teams and 82 total participants in the annual tournament hosted by Duke University.

DURHAM, N.C. – Florida Southern began the 2016-17 season Saturday at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke University and was led by its two returning All-Americans, juniors John VanDerLaan and John Coultas. VanDerLaan turned in scores of 74 and 73, while Coultas has a 76 and 72 to wrap up day one of the tournament separated by one stroke in the individual standings.
Men's Golf Team Ranked #2 in Bushnell Golfweek Preseason National Poll

NORMAN, Okla. – The Florida Southern men's golf team is ranked #2 in the nation in the Bushnell Golfweek Division II Preseason Coaches Poll with schools from the Sunshine State Conference holding down the top four spots in the rankings. The Moccasins trail only defending national champion Saint Leo, and are just ahead of Lynn and Barry. All four schools received at least one first-place vote.
Coultas Falls in Quarterfinals of Western Amateur Championship

LAKE FOREST, IL - Moccasin rising junior Coultas advanced to the quarterfinals of the 113th Western Amateur Championship played this week here at Knollwood Club where he was defeated on the 18th hole by Davis Riley of the University of Alabama. Last year Coultas advanced to the Sweet 16 at the Western Amateur, one of amateur golf's most prestigious tournaments. Coultas tied for fourth in stroke play with a four-round total of 281.

LAKELAND - Florida Southern men's golfer John Coultas continued to take home postseason accolades as he was named to the All-Nicklaus Team for the 2015-16 season by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This is the third time in the last four season a Moccasin has been so honored as Tim Crouch was selected in 2011-12 and 2012-13 after winning back-to-back national championships.

FORMBY, ENGLAND - Sophomore John VanDerLaan has been named to the PING All-America Second Team as announced today by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Teammate and fellow sophomore, John Coultas, was earlier named to the PING All-America First Team in an announcement at the NCAA Division II National Championship in mid-May.

DUBLIN, Ohio - Florida Southern sophomore John Coultas continues to rake in the postseason accolades as the Valrico, Fla., native has been named the 2016 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award winner as the top men's golfer in Division II as announced Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Jack Nicklaus Award presented by Barbasol recognizes the top player at the Division I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA levels.
