Carl Spansk Named First Team Academic All-American in Men's Soccer

Having already made the academic all-district team three years in a row, Florida Southern defender/midfielder Carl Spansk has now been voted to the 2017 Division II Men's Soccer Academic All-America Team, which honors student-athletes who have the best combination of athletic and academic success. He's now the third player in team history to earn that distinction. The senior from Mora, Sweden concluded his career this year having made more appearances and more starts than any other Moccasin over the last four seasons.

Spansk had been one of only two players in team history to make the academic all-district team in all three years of eligibility and had twice won the NCAA Division II Academic Achievement Award. Now he's a First Team Academic All-American with a perfect 4.00 grade point average while majoring in economics & finance. To be eligible for the Academic All-America or all-district team, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30, be at least a sophomore, and have completed one full academic year at the college or university they are attending.

Of the 33 players on the first, second or third team, 13 have 4.00 grade point averages, and 25 are at 3.90 or higher. Spansk is one of two players from the Sunshine State Conference on the First Team, with Rollins senior defender Fritz Engel the other. The SSC had five players overall across the three teams.

Spansk has been a key member of the Florida Southern defense since his arrival in 2014. Over the last four seasons he has played in 53 games with 44 starts as either a defender or midfielder, while scoring two goals with three assists for seven points. This year he helped the Moccasins post a 1.14 goals against average, which was their lowest in 16 years and the fourth lowest in team history.

Spansk joins Ahmad Belfon and Givi Kokaia as Florida Southern men's soccer Academic All-Americans. Belfon was a 3-time selection as a defender from 1997-99, making the First Team as a junior and senior. Kokaia was a First Team selection as a forward in 2010.
