2018 Florida Southern Men's Soccer News

  • Moccasin Athletics Partners with AFSP to #StopSuicide
    September 19, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – Florida Southern College Athletics and its Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) have announced that the Moccasins will partner with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in a year-long effort to raise awareness and donations to help fight suicide.
  • Meehan and the Mocs Do it Again: No. 18 Florida Southern Downs No. 14 Rollins 2-0 on a Long Night at Moccasin Field
    September 19, 2018
LAKELAND – A lengthy weather delay midway through the first half proved to be only a temporary stoppage to the Florida Southern men’s soccer team, and any fears it may have killed the momentum provided by a James Meehan goal just before it were unfounded. Not long after play resumed following an hour and 45-minute delay, Meehan scored again for the Moccasins, sending them to a 2-0 win over 14th-ranked Rollins at Moccasin Field Wednesday night.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #15 (October 22, 1988)
    September 18, 2018
Florida Southern has had several wins over nationally ranked teams since polls became a regular part of the landscape in the early to mid-80s. What is interesting to note in the case of the Moccasin men’s soccer team though is how most of their biggest wins have come on the road. Four times Florida Southern has beaten a top-10 team and only one of those games took place at Barnett Field. Even a win over top-ranked Barry in 2000 was played on the road, so Trevor Clark’s performance that night will have to wait for another list to be detailed fully. Instead, the No. 16 game on this list is the first time Florida Southern ever beat a ranked team, and that did occur at Barnett Field in a game against Randolph-Macon on October 22, 1988.
  • Men’s Soccer Team Moves into Top-25 for the First Time Since 2010
    September 18, 2018
For the first time in eight years, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team has landed in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll, with the Moccasins at No. 18 in the September 18 rankings. The Mocs have earned that spot following their first 5-0 start since 1997, which included shutout wins over Trinity Baptist, South Carolina Aiken, Montevallo (AL), and Newberry (SC) to start the season before a 2-1 overtime win at then-No. 15 Lynn on Saturday.
  • Florida Southern Sweeps Men’s Soccer Players of the Week
    September 17, 2018
MELBOURNE, FL - Following its 2-1 overtime win at Lynn on Saturday, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team swept the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week awards with James Meehan bringing home that honor for the offense and Benny Yusufoglu claiming it for the defense. It’s the first time in three years the Moccasins won both of the weekly SSC awards.
  • Overtime Goal by Meehan Lifts Florida Southern to 2-1 Win at Lynn in Conference Opener
    September 15, 2018
BOCA RATON, FL – James Meehan scored a little over five minutes into overtime after a fantastic game by goalkeeper Benny Yusufoglu in regulation time as Florida Southern knocked off 15th-ranked Lynn 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams. The win pushes the Moccasins’ record to 5-0 for the first time since 1997.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #16 (September 25, 1978)
    September 14, 2018
When the Sunshine State Conference was founded in 1975, it was created as a basketball conference first with other sports to follow. Many of the six charter members (Biscayne, Eckerd, Florida Southern, Rollins, Saint Leo, and UCF) had long-standing relationships with each other through the Florida Intercollegiate Conference, which continued to play soccer as a league until 1976. The SSC adopted soccer soon after, and in 1978, crowned its first champion in that sport in a tournament hosted by Florida Southern at Barnett Field. The first game in the first SSC Men’s Soccer Tournament on September 25, 1978, is No. 16 on our list.
  • Gums Scores Twice and Moccasins Extend Shutout Streak to Four in 3-0 Win over Newberry
    September 09, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – Christoph Gums scored his first two goals of the season, and the first two of the game on Sunday, and Florida Southern continued its season-opening win and shutout streaks with a 3-0 victory over Newberry.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #17 (October 26, 2013)
    September 07, 2018
If there has been one opponent throughout the years which has provided the Florida Southern women’s soccer team with the most unusual games, it has been Lynn University. How many other rivals in any conference can say they’ve played to a draw four consecutive times (in one 12-month stretch no less), or have another tie game in which both teams scored five goals without a chance to truly resolve it due to unplayable field conditions? There have been some other noteworthy encounters that did not end in ties (Moccasin wins in 2008 and in the 2009 SSC Tournament come to mind), but something about that four-game stretch of unfinished business stands out a little more. It’s the last of those games that took place on October 26, 2013, and ended 3-3 that makes No. 17 on the countdown.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #18 (September 25, 1980)
    September 04, 2018
Throughout the years, Florida Southern has had a long run of outstanding goalkeepers, beginning with the program’s first All-American, Bill Currie in the late 50s and early 60s. Rarely have the Moccasins been without one who was, at the very least, an all-conference caliber player between the posts, and the early 80s were no exception when Bobby Kramig filled that role. In his two full seasons as a starter, Kramig put up the type of numbers that may not be seen again at Florida Southern, and on September 25, 1980, he was at his best with 24 saves in a win over Florida Tech-Jensen Beach.
  • Ling-Vannerus Erupts for Four Goals as Moccasins Blank Montevallo 5-0 on Labor Day
    September 03, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – Jacob Ling-Vannerus erupted for four goals, all in the span of nine minutes of the second half, while Christoph Gums and Ian McIntosh each assisted two goals to lead the Florida Southern men’s soccer team to a 5-0 win over Montevallo.
  • Penalty Kick Provides the Only Scoring as Moccasins Post 1-0 Win at USC Aiken on Saturday
    September 01, 2018
AIKEN, SC – Julian Jordan-Canosa converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute for the only goal of the night, and the Moccasin defense did the rest by posting its second shutout in as many games, giving the Florida Southern men’s soccer team a 1-0 win at South Carolina Aiken. Saturday’s night victory gives Florida Southern a 2-0 record to start the season.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #19 (September 16, 1999)
    August 31, 2018
Women’s soccer was added to the Florida Southern athletic department in 1998 and joined the men’s team in calling Barnett Field home for the next 19 years. The first game in the program’s history would be a logical one to have on our top-20 countdown, but it’s not the one presented at No. 19. Instead, the first women’s soccer game on the list comes from September 16, 1999, and though it was not the Moccasins’ first win, the 5-4 decision over Rollins was their first conference win.
  • Six Second-Half Goals Send Florida Southern to 6-0 Win over Trinity Baptist in Men's Soccer
    August 30, 2018
LAKELAND, FL – Scoring six goals in the second half, the first two coming less than a minute apart, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team opened the 2018 season, and their new home field, with a 6-0 win over Trinity Baptist. The game marked the Moccasins’ return to campus after playing the entire 2017 season in Auburndale while Moccasin Field was still under construction.
  • Florida Southern Men's Soccer Team Kicks off 2018 Season with First Game at Moccasin Field
    August 29, 2018
Thursday night, the Florida Southern men’s soccer team opens the 2018 season with Trinity Baptist College serving as the opposition in the Moccasins’ first game at their new home, Moccasin Field. After playing in Auburndale last year while construction was completed on the Barnett Athletic Complex, the Moccasins will be back on campus for the first time since October 29, 2016, when they dropped a 3-2 decision to Barry.
  • Top-20 Soccer Moments at Barnett Field, #20 (October 24, 1958)
    August 28, 2018
It would have been nice to start the countdown with the first intercollegiate game ever played at Barnett Field, but the Moccasins lost to Rollins that day in 1957, and no one wants to start a celebration of history that way. The Mocs ended up 1-1-1 at home that season, but the first game on our list and No. 20 on the countdown, was their season opener in 1958, a 5-1 win over Stetson.
  • Presenting Barnett Field's Top 20 Moments for Florida Southern Soccer
    August 25, 2018
The Florida Southern soccer teams are less than a week away from officially starting the 2018 season and playing their first games in their new on-campus home, Moccasin Field. Though Thursday night will mark the first soccer games played there, the Florida Southern lacrosse teams played on the field last spring, so a formal christening has already taken place. Likewise, the softball team opened Chris Bellotto Field in February, leaving only men’s and women’s soccer to take their first steps in a facility laid down on the same footprint as the old.
  • SSC Preseason Men’s Soccer Poll Announced with Florida Southern Picked Seventh
    August 21, 2018
MELBOURNE, FL – The Sunshine State Conference men’s soccer preseason poll has been announced and the Florida Southern Moccasins were picked to finish seventh (tied with Barry) in the annual vote of league coaches. Defending regular-season champion Palm Beach Atlantic is the favorite to win the title, while SSC Tournament champion Tampa was picked second, and 2017 national runner-up Lynn was third. Those three teams were separated by a total of two points.
  • Men's Soccer to Play Nine Home Matches in 2018
    July 03, 2018
LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College men's soccer head coach Jason Carlson has revealed his team's schedule for the upcoming 2018 season. The Moccasins will play their first season on the new Moccasin Field at the Barnett Athletic Complex after spending last season playing home games in Auburndale. After finishing 7-7 a year ago, Carlson and the Mocs will look to improve on a No. 6 seed in the Sunshine State Conference tournament.
