MELBOURNE, FL – Florida Southern has landed three players on the 2018 All-Sunshine State Conference Men's Soccer Team, led by repeat selection Christoph Gums who is a first-team midfielder. Earning second-team honors are defender Foster Appiah and forward James Meehan. The three all-conference selections are the most for Florida Southern in 12 years.
Gums was Second Team All-SSC a year ago after he transferred to Florida Southern from Manhattan College. He's the first Moccasin to earn back-to-back all-conference awards since current assistant coach Ashley Holmes accomplished that three years in a row from 2010-12. Gums is also the first Moccasin on the All-SSC First Team since Holmes in 2012. The junior from Greifswald, Germany moved up to the first team this year after finishing second on the team with 18 points on five goals and eight assists. Only one other midfielder in the SSC had more points than Gums, who now has 34 in 30 career games. He is also tied for second in the SSC in assists after tying for the lead last year and has moved into the top-10 all-time at Florida Southern with 16.
Appiah, a junior from Kumasi, Ghana, is also in his second year with the Moccasins as a transfer. He started 13 games at center back as part of a Florida Southern defense that allowed just over one goal per game. The Mocs' team goals against average of 1.06 was the fourth lowest in the program's 62-year history and was the best in 17 years. They also allowed just 8.9 shots per game, another average that ranks fourth in the team record book. The Moccasins had nine shutouts to lead the SSC during the regular season, which ranks second in team history. Appiah also scored one goal himself, giving the Moccasins a 1-0 win at Tampa on September 29.
Meehan joined the Moccasins this year as a transfer from Calumet College in Indiana and led the team in scoring with nine goals and 20 points. That put him among the SSC leaders in both categories (tied for sixth in points, and tied for fourth in goals) and made him the first Moccasin with a 20-point season since Zach Hofstetter in 2010 and '11. His three multi-goal games this season were tied for the most in the SSC, one of which gave the Mocs a 2-0 win over No. 14 Rollins On September 19. Meehan also scored the game-winner in overtime to beat No. 15 Lynn, 2-1, four nights earlier, one of his four game-winning goals this season.
The last time Florida Southern had three players make the all-conference team was 2006, when forward Patrik Dandanell, midfielder Ola Sandquist, and defender Emil Kumlin were members. None of those three were seniors and neither are are any of the three this year who led the Moccasins to a 12-5 overall record, their best since the 2001 team also went 12-5.
Winning the league's major awards this year Barry forward Flavio Colasanti as the player-of-the-year and offensive player-of-the-year; Palm Beach Atlantic defender Juan Sanchez as the defensive player-of-the-year; Barry midfielder Francisco Greco as the freshman-of-the-year; and Palm Beach Atlantic's Brian McMahon as the coach-of-the-year.
