For the second year in a row, Florida Southern swimmer Diego Gimenez has been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Team for his accomplishments both as an athlete and student. The men's at-large team is comprised of student-athletes in the sports of swimming, tennis, golf, lacrosse, ice hockey, skiing, wrestling, gymnastics, rifle, water polo, fencing, and volleyball. Gimenez was one of two Moccasins on the men's at-large team, with junior golfer John Coultas the other. Coultas is also an Academic All-District selection for the second year in a row.
All but one of the 11 student-athletes on the District 5 team came from the Sunshine State Conference, and Florida Southern was one of two schools with multiple selections. Barry University was the other with one golfer and one tennis player. Gimenez was one of two swimmers and was joined by Victor Tarin from Nova Southeastern. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, have completed at least one full year at his or her current school, and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.
A senior from Burgos, Spain, Gimenez owned a 3.93 GPA through the fall semester while majoring in Computer Science and Economics & Finance. He picked up a total of five All-American awards at this year's NCAA Division II National Swimming & Diving Championships to finish his career with 12. Two of his 2017 All-American awards came in relay events in which the Moccasins won bronze medals. That helped the Moccasins finish fourth at the National Finals for their sixth straight top-5 finish.
Gimenez was an honorable mention All-American as an individual in the 100-backstroke, marking the third consecutive year he brought home a certificate in that event. That was one of four individual events in which he qualified for nationals this year, and they covered the freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. He ranked #1 on the Florida Southern times list in the 50-free, and was #2 in the 100-free, 100-back and 100-fly. That also helped him earn Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference honors,
Gimenez was also named the Florida Southern Athletic Director's Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year winner for men's swimming for the second year in a row. That award is given to the student-athlete on each team with the highest cumulative grade point average through the fall 2016 semester with at least 60 completed credit hours.
By earning a spot on the all-district team, Gimenez will now go on the ballot for the Men's At-Large Academic All-America Team which is scheduled to be announced on June 7. Last year he was voted a First Team Academic All-American and the Sunshine State Conference Male Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year.
