MACON, GA - Six singles players and one doubles team won first round matches to advance in the Mercer Gridiron Classic played here Friday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
In the Jets Division, Miguel Alvarez-Hevia topped 5th seeded Berry's Griffin Davis, 6-1, 6-3, to move on to play Fernando Guardia of Mercer, also fifth-seeded, who received a first round bye. Oscar Soderlund also picked up a win in the Jets Division, beating Middle Georgia's Alejandro Prada, 6-0, 6-1, and will face Troy's Andre Baldo, the division's #2 seed, who also received a first-round bye. Both second round matches will be played Saturday.
In the Raiders Division, Florida Southern picked up two more wins. Mark Bucknam prevailed, 6-3, 3-5, 10-7, over Berry's Jordan Crance and will play third-seeded Szabin Pusztay, the division's number three seed from Alabama State, on Saturday. Blaine Miller beat Shazz Perrani of Troy, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to play sixth-seeded Sachin Khurana of Mercer on Saturday. Brian Wilson was awarded a first-round bye and will face eighth-seeded Rafa Hewett of Point, who was also given a first-round pass to play on Saturday.
In the Buccaneers Division, Laurent Mailloux took a first-round bye and will play on Saturday against sixth-seeded Jiaqi Duan of Troy, who is the sixth seed and also got a free pass to the second round. Also in the Buccaneers Division, Fabian Lundberg fell, 6-2, 7-5, to Alabama State's Ion Efrim and Brian Slivonik dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Middle Georgia's Nisanth Rebello.
In the Texans Division of doubles, Soderlund and Miller combined to record a 6-2 victory over Jake Ward and Daniel Alligood of Berry and then were defeated 6-1 by Santiago Suarez and Artemie Amari, the number two seeded team from Georgia Southern. Also, in the division, Wilson and Bucknam fell, 6-4, to Mercer's fourth-seeded team of Oliver Stuart and Efstathios Tsiranidis and will play in the consolation draw Saturday against Middle Georgia's Leandro Otero and Jordan Clayton.
In the Vikings Division of doubles, both Moccasin duos suffered defeats. Slivonik and Mailloux dropped a 6-1 match to Duan and Austin Racine of Troy while Lundberg and Alvarez-Hevia fell 6-4 to Takura Mlamo and Efrim of Alabama State.
