Men's Cross Country Ranked Second in Preseason Regional Poll

NEW ORLEANS – The Florida Southern men's cross country team opens the 2017 season ranked number two in the preseason South Regional Poll as released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Moccasins finished third at the 2016 NCAA South Region Meet.

Florida Southern is the only South Region school to have won two regional titles in the last five years, takiing the 2013 and 2013 events. Lee won it all in 2016, with Saint Leo winning in 2015 and Nova Southeastern in 2012. The 2017 NCAA South Regional Championship will be held Nov. 4 at Lakeland's Holloway Park and Nature Preserve.

Lee holds down the top spot in the regional poll followed by FSC, Alabama-Huntsville, Saint Leo and Embry-Riddle. Rounding out the top ten are Union, Nova Southeastern, Tampa, West Florida, and West Alabama.

The Sunshine State Conference has five teams in the top ten. In addition to Florida Southern, Saint Leo, Embry-Riddle, Nova Southeastern, and Tampa are ranked. The Gulf South Conference is represented by Lee, Alabama-Huntsville, Union, West Florida, and West Alabama.

Florida Southern opens the 2017 season by hosting the Holloway Park Preseason Festival, Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Holloway Park and Nature Preserve in Lakeland.

The USTFCCCA NCAA Division II region polls are released every week during the regular season. The poll ranks the Top 10 men's and women's cross country teams in each of the eight NCAA regions. Eight regional representatives coordinate the voting in their own region with input from the coaches.
