MELBOURNE, FL - Florida Southern senior Bobby Ormsby has been selected as the first Sunshine State Conference Runner of the Week for 2017, as announced today by the league office. This is the third such honor for Ormsby, who was twice named Runner of the Week as a sophomore in 2014.
Ormsby picked up his first collegiate win in the Moccasins' opening meet of the season on Saturday, turning in a time of 15:44.49 to win the 5K race at the Holloway Park Preseason Festival co-hosted by Florida Southern and Southeastern University at the Holloway Park and Nature Preserve. The time was 6.9 seconds faster than the next finisher, Shaun Bullock of Embry-Riddle.
The win by Ormsby helped lift Florida Southern to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division II portion of the meet. The Moccasins totaled 39 points, to finish 12 points behind Embry-Riddle, which is competing in its first season as a full member of the Sunshine State Conference.
A total of 90 individuals ran in the early morning race. There were 10 teams entered, five Division II schools and four in the NAIA/Small School category. The University of South Florida was the lone NCAA Division I program in the competition.
Florida Southern will have two weeks off from competition to prepare for the Trevecca D2 Showcase on Sept. 23 in Nashville, TN.
The Moccasins will return to Holloway Park on Sept. 29 for the flrunners Invitational. Florida Southern College will also be the host school when the NCAA South Regional Meet comes to Holloway Park on Nov. 4.
