Matt Levassiur, volunteer assistant coach at Florida Southern since 2015, was named head coach of the Moccasins men's cross country and track teams on May 14, 2018.
"I'm excited to work with one of the fastest men's freshmen classes in FSC's history and aim to defend last year's SSC championship," says Levassiur. "I'd like to thank Pete Meyer for giving me this chance and I hope to share my love of running and teaching to develop a culture of consistency at Florida Southern."
Florida Southern won the program's 17th Sunshine State Conference championship in the Fall of 2017 with Mason Jones earning SSC Freshman of the Year Honors. In track, Jones set the school record in the 10,000-meter at Bison Outdoor Classic on April 14 while fellow freshman Mitchell Kozik set the FSC record in the 3000-meter Steeplechase at the UNF Invitational on April 27.
Levassiur was an 11-time All-American at Adams State College, earning three All-American honors in cross country, three in indoor track, and five in outdoor track. He was captain of the Grizzlies' 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship cross country team and posted three top-15 finishes at the 2001, 2002, and 2003 national championship meets. He was also a scoring member of five top-four teams at NCAA Championships (three in cross country and one each in indoor and outdoor track).
An avid runner, Levassiur has two top-25 finishes at World Marathon Major Events, including a 16th place finish at the 2011 Chicago Marathon, and a 22nd place finish at the 2007 Boston Marathon. A certified USATF Level 1 coach, he was a member of the Team USA 2004 World Mountain Racing championship squad and competed in 2008 and 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials.
Levassiur has been a high school teacher since graduating from Adams State in 2005 and is currently an English teacher at Plant City (FL) High School. He will earn his master's degree in coaching from Adams State this summer.
He is married to Stephanie Bylander, who is the head coach of the Florida Southern College women's cross country and track teams. The couple has an eight-year-old daughter, Allie.
