Harris Picks Up 160th Career Win as Moccasins Defeat Bluefield State

LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College women's basketball set a program record limiting Bluefield State to a single point in the second quarter of a 93-41 victory. The Mocs (7-1, 2-0 SSC) and The Blues traded a pair of leads in the first two minutes of the game and Florida Southern never looked back. 

Camille Giardina and Mackenzie Steele led the Mocs with 19 points each while Anja Fuchs-Robetin (13) and Marta Aranda (11) each tallied double-digit point totals to lead the Mocs to their seventh win on the season. The Moccasins return to action on Monday, Dec. 17 when they take on Saginaw Valley State at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 1st Quarter | Bluefield State opened the scoring as they went up 4-3 early in the first quarter. Florida Southern would go on an 11-0 run to extend its lead to 14-4. Giardina came off the bench to knock down nine points for the Mocs. Fuchs-Robetin provided a key block on the Blues to set up a 4-2 run for the Mocs to end the opening frame.  
  • 2nd Quarter | The Mocs set a new program record as they limited Bluefield State to a single point in the second quarter. Florida Southern outscored the Blues by 31. Jia Coppola made a free throw at the six-minute mark to for the only point in the quarter. Steele hit a trio of shots from long range to lead the Mocs scoring outburst, while Aranda tacked on six points of her own.  FSC went on a 9-0 run to open the period and then closed the half out on a 23-0 scoring run. The Mocs would take a 43-point lead into the locker room. 
  • 3rd Quarter | Bluefield State went on an 8-2 run to begin the second half. The Blues would use a 38.5% shooting percentage to total 14 points in the third quarter, five more than they had in the first two quarters combined. Fuchs-Robetin (5) and Julia Jenike (4) would lead the Mocs as the team would add on 18 points to extend its lead to 70-23 after three-quarters of play. 
  • 4th Quarter | The final quarter saw the Mocs knock down ten shots including a one from long range. Steele and Fuchs-Robetin paced the Mocs with six points each in the final quarter of play. Lyndsay Hatfield led the Blues with ten points and ran her total points to 14 on the night as she was the only one on the visiting team to hit double digits in points.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Florida Southern held its opponent to its lowest point total in a single quarter as the Blues added only a single point to their total in the second quarter. Prior to tonight's game, Florida Southern limited Nova Southeastern to just two points in the final quarter of a 68-44 victory on December 2, 2017.   
  • Fuchs-Robetin recorded her second double-double of the season as she recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds. She now has 20 career double-doubles in a Moccasin uniform. 
  • Giardina added another 19 points to her total as she pushed her career point total to 1,424. She ranks 9th in school history in career scoring and is 63 points shy of tying Keisha Richardson for 8th all-time. Anja Fuchs-Robetin increased her career point total to 1,155 to move closer to Antonia Newman (1,164) for 17th in the all-time record books.
  • Moccasin head coach Betsy Harris is picked up her 160th career win in eight seasons (160-63) as a collegiate head coach. She now is 92-36 as the head coach at FSC.

  • The Mocs are in the midst of a stretch of five-straight home games including matchups against Saginaw Valley (Dec. 17), and Cedarville (Dec. 18). FSC closes out the calendar year at Nova Southeastern (Dec. 29).
